With Iran already suffering from a very bad weekend, there are reports that it almost became much worse; there are reports that the regime's expected next Supreme Leader was wounded in an Israeli air strike. The expected new goblin-in-charge is Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the old, now room-temperature goblin-in-charge, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

It's not yet known where Mojtaba Khamenei was at the time of the attack.

Mojtaba Khamenei — the expected next supreme leader — was reportedly wounded in an Israeli air strike.

The son of Iran’s slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei survived an assassination attempt made by Israel during the devastating launch of Lion’s Roar military operation Feb. 28, which occurred in tandem with the US’s Operation Epic Fury, Times of Israel reported on Saturday.

Other strikes in the joint military attack killed his father and roughly 40 other high-ranking Islamic Republic leaders.

Also killed was Mojtaba’s wife, Zahra Haddad Adel, who came from a family long associated with the country’s theocracy.

It’s not clear if Mojtaba, 56, was with his father in the Ayatollah’s compound that was decimated by airstrikes, or if he was targeted in a separate attack on the regime.

The details and extent of his injuries are also not clear.

The report here is unclear as to whether Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in the latest round of attacks, or in the initial wave that removed his father, the late Supreme Leader, from the world of the corporate.

This next statement leaps into belaboring the obvious:

He has likely gone into hiding as both the US and Israel continue to rain missiles on the Islamic Republic.

The report continues:

Mojtaba is favored by Tehran’s influential Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to succeed his father, but some in the 88-member Assembly of Experts – tasked with choosing the next supreme leader – have reportedly raised issues over passing the torch to the longtime ayatollah’s son.

The slain supreme leader’s son has been known for his staunch adherence to his father’s hardline conservatism and anti-Western sentiments that have been a hallmark of the Islamic Republic.

President Trump condemend (sic) Motjaba’s likely appointment as “unacceptable” for the US and vowed that it would not bring an end to the war.

So, this is a case of "welcome the new goblin, same as the old goblin." We can muster a little sympathy for his wife, despite her reportedly coming from a family with all the charm and grace of the late Ayatollah, given that she was likely little more than property and didn't play any part in the regime. As for Mojtaba Khamenei, let's hope that the Israelis are keeping him on the target list. When his father was removed from the game board, after his decades of advocacy and support for terror groups, the civilized world breathed a sigh of relief and Iranian ex-pats were literally dancing in the streets. There's little reason to believe that this would be anything other than "like father, like son."
