Wargaming the 2026 Election: the Texas Senate Race

Townhall Media

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time in Texas, a state I had not visited for nearly 40 years. During that visit, I had the chance to gab with some Texans, all of them outside the major cities. They all were, as I remember the main run of Texans being: Practical, sensible, and conservative.

Texas also has a United States Senate race getting underway, one of many such in the upcoming midterm elections. One of the candidates is... let's be polite and say "interesting," and she's currently holding a slight lead in the Democratic Party primary for the Lone Star State's Senate seat. That would be, of course, the nutcase Representative Jasmine Crockett (TX-30). What makes her mildly interesting isn't her typically hysterical pronouncements or her room-temperature IQ; it's the fact that she's actually leading her Democrat opponent in the primary.

The RealClearPolitics (RCP) polling average, as of this writing, has Crockett tied with her opponent, James Talarico, but the momentum seems to be swinging Crockett's way. While an Emerson poll conducted from January 10th to January 12th has Talarico with a 9-point lead, two more recent polls closed that gap, with a Texas Public Opinion Research (TPOR)  poll from January 14 to January 21 giving Crockett a 1-point lead, and a University of Houston survey from January 20 to January 31 gives Crockett an 8-point lead.

Republican Representative Wesley Hunt (TX-38), who has also announced for the Senate race, has not yet appeared in any polling tracked by RCP.

Texas Republicans are no doubt rubbing their hands together with glee at the prospect of putting their candidate up against Jasmine Crockett.

Speaking of Republicans, that primary, with Attorney General Ken Paxton challenging incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX). In the RCP average, at the moment, AG Paxton is holding a 2-point lead against Senator Cornyn, with the latest poll, again from the University of Houston from January 20th to January 31st, giving Paxton an 8-point lead.

Moving on to the general election, the RCP averages don't paint an encouraging picture for Democrats. Here's how those possible races break down:

Paxton v. Talarico: Paxton +1.0

Cornyn v. Talarico: Cornyn +2.0

Hunt v. Talarico: Hunt +4.0

Paxton v. Crockett: Paxton +1.0

Cornyn v. Crockett: Cornyn +3.5

Hunt v. Crockett: Hunt +4.0

Those could be better, but they are moving in the right direction.

So, to every Texas Republican and right-leaning independent, let's get this done. It's a key year, a key race, and which among you wants to listen to six years of Jasmine Crockett's outbursts from the floor of the Senate?

Here's the thing: Regardless of who pulls out the primary win, Texas Republicans had better get in lockstep behind their candidate for the general. Someone like Jasmine Crockett is manifestly unfit for this office - not that she's fit for the one she holds now. Better to send her to the unemployment line, and to that end, the best tactic Texas Republicans could employ would be to just let her talk. A few surreptitious donations to help her buy more airtime wouldn't be the worst idea. Every time she opens her mouth, something dumb comes out; every time she speaks, she hands her Republican opponent another arrow for his campaign quiver.

The Texas primary election is set for March 3rd.
