It appears that there may be a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine in the works, which could bring an end to the Russo-Ukrainian War, which has been going on since 2022, when Russia invaded eastern Ukraine. This war could be said to have been ongoing, in fact, since Russia's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and seizure of the port of Sevastopol in 2014.
Ukrainian officials are reporting that talks have been held between Ukrainian, Russian, and American officials, and the "core elements" of a peace deal have been agreed upon.
Ukraine has agreed to the core elements of a peace proposal brokered by the Trump administration, with some details still to be worked out, a U.S. official confirmed Tuesday to NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer.
Rustem Umerov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, confirmed in a social media post that Ukrainian and U.S. delegations agreed on “the core terms” of the agreement presented in Geneva.
“We appreciate the productive and constructive meetings held in Geneva between the Ukrainian and U.S. delegations, as well as President Trump’s steadfast efforts to end the war,” Umerov wrote in a post on the social platform X.
“Our delegations reached a common understanding on the core terms of the agreement discussed in Geneva,” he continued. “We now count on the support of our European partners in our further steps.”
“We look forward to organizing a visit of Ukraine’s President to the US at the earliest suitable date in November to complete final steps and make a deal with President Trump,” he added.

The agreement was announced after what is reported as a secret meeting between representatives of the three nations in Abu Dhabi.
What's not yet clear is precisely what "core terms" are. The Trump administration recently floated a 28-point plan that involved Ukraine's surrender of the Donbass and other parts of eastern Ukraine, and Ukraine was never going to go for that; but Secretary of State Rubio, as RedState's Jennifer Van Laar reported, quickly expressed optimism that a deal was in the offing.

While we don't know much about the new plan, these reports indicate it has been reduced from 28 points to 19, and some of the items involving amnesty for possible war crimes and the gutting of Ukraine's military have been removed. It's not clear as of this writing what, if any, added territorial concessions Ukraine may be asked to make. As I've been saying and writing since 2022, the very most Ukraine can hope for as far as territorial concessions is a return to the status quo ante 2022. It's unclear if that is one of the points remaining to be decided, but one thing seems certain: Ukraine will be required, one way or another, to give up any notions of the Crimean Peninsula being returned to Ukraine.
Another item from the initial proposal was forbidding Ukraine from joining NATO; it's unclear at this point whether that will be part of any final deal.
This remains a developing situation, and negotiations will likely go on through what is here in the United States a holiday weekend. Stay tuned; we will be bringing you updates as events warrant, and maybe, just maybe, Ukraine will have something to be thankful for.
Editor’s Note: Thanks to President Trump and his administration’s bold leadership, we are respected on the world stage, and our enemies are being put on notice.
