Breakthrough: Trump, Middle Eastern Leaders Sign Historic Peace Deal

It's done. The Middle East peace deal is signed. President Donald Trump, on stage with several regional leaders, signed the document on Monday.

Prior to the signing, the key people involved with the deal posed for a photo:

Amid the snapping shutters, President Trump said:

Everybody, smile. We just made a big deal today, maybe the biggest ever, so smile. The press has treated us very well. Everybody likes us. Thank you very much, everybody.

Then, the signing itself:

The actual signing included President Trump and the leaders of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey. Israel and Hamas have already agreed to a cease-fire and the return of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Monday's signing ceremony was accompanied by suitably dramatic music, during which President Trump remarked:

This took 3,000 years to get to this point. Can you believe it? And it's going to hold up, too. It's going to hold up.

Israel and Hamas had already agreed on the structure of the peace agreement. On Monday, 20 Israeli hostages were released, reportedly the last living hostages held by Hamas.

Israel is in the process of releasing almost 2,000 "Palestinian" prisoners, also part of the peace agreement. In Gaza, searches are ongoing for the remains of hostages who did not survive their captivity - to put it bluntly, hostages who were murdered by Hamas.

Humanitarian aid is also expected to flow more freely into Gaza under international supervision.

Regardless of how long it lasts, this is a big deal and a historic moment. The parties involved, most of the leaders of Europe and the Middle East, realize what most of the American left will deny: This would not have happened but for President Trump's involvement. Had the American elections in the fall of 2024 gone differently, this peace deal would almost certainly not have happened.

I've been markedly skeptical about this whole process, mostly because the primary belligerents involved, Hamas and Iran, cannot be trusted. Their history speaks volumes: They have typically used any cease-fire to prepare for their next atrocities. They lie, they know they lie while they are lying, and we know they are lying while they lie.

But this time may be different. Almost every nation in the region has agreed to this deal and pledged to support it. President Trump, we are reminded, accomplished in his first term what many thought was impossible: The Abraham Accords. That agreement has held. Maybe this one will as well; it's a day that lends itself to optimism.

Hamas, though: Hamas, Hezbollah, and their ilk will remain as they are, and must be watched, and, when necessary, struck down. To that end, I would once more invoke Santayana's caution: Only the dead have seen the end of war.
