Why is it that Democrats, almost en bloc, always oppose any attempts at ensuring the integrity of our elections? They oppose requiring voters to identify themselves before voting, even though they are in favor of requiring not only an ID but also passing a background check to buy a firearm. They oppose requiring voters to submit proof of citizenship while voting. They oppose anything that might enhance election integrity, and it's not hard to noodle out why that might be.
Case in point: On Thursday morning, the House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship to register to vote. Democrats voted against it - at least, all but four did.
The four Democrats who support election integrity are Ed Case (HI), Henry Cuellar (TX), Jared Golden (ME), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA). At least on this issue, there is some sanity remaining among Congressional Democrats; at least, for four of them, on this issue.
A "Statement of Administration Policy" from the Trump administration reads in part:
Through amendments to the NVRA (National Voting Rights Act) the SAVE Act would end the lawlessness by requiring States to obtain proof of United States citizenship before registering an individual to vote in Federal elections, while establishing safeguard to ensure every citizen is able to register.
There's nothing unreasonable about this. There's no reason why anyone, in or out of political office, should oppose any measure ensuring the integrity of our elections, including ensuring that only citizens can register to vote.
Well, there may be one. It's a bad reason, but it's a reason. The only conceivable reason to oppose this is to deliberately reduce the integrity of our elections for federal offices - to put it bluntly, to make it easier to cheat. One party, as this vote illustrates with stunning clarity, is in favor of making it harder to cheat; the other party is in favor of making it easier. That speaks volumes. Of course, there is also the Trump Derangement Syndrome, that social contagion that is spreading through the Democratic Party like a wildfire through a Southern California neighborhood; if the Trump administration came out in favor of flowers, puppies, and kittens, a strong majority of Democrats would automatically be against them.
These people are not stable.

Now, the SAVE Act, we should note, passed by a margin of 220-208. That's far too close for a matter of this importance. The GOP majorities in both houses are too narrow for comfort. So far, the House and Senate Republicans have shown that they can approximate the Democrats at something the Democrats have always been good at - sticking together. But Democrats can do that more easily, as collectivism is in their nature. Republicans, well, being in the GOP leadership often seems to require a master's degree in cat-herding.
We need to keep that up. And we need to expand those majorities in the midterms. This vote shows just how easily the whole thing could still go south.
