CBS News Poll: Americans Approve of Trump's Immigration Policies, Mixed on Economic Issues

Polls are tricky things. Many of us don't pay them too much mind, and that's understandable. Many pollsters are biased, and some use questionable methods.

But they're interesting, nonetheless, especially when they show trends. We political junkies love dissecting polls, and now we have another: A new CBS/YouGov poll has been released, and it's showing some mixed results for President Trump's policies. Here are a few key takeaways.

Donald Trump won the 2024 election in large part on the economy and the idea that he'd make Americans financially better off.

Just before he took office, a sizable four in 10 felt his policies as president would do just that.

Asked about what's happening today, just a quarter of Americans say those policies are making them financially better off. Nearly twice as many say he's making their finances worse.

The actual numbers: 23 percent of respondents said they were better off, as opposed to 42 percent replying "worse off," and 35 percent "the same." Now, you could point to that and note that this is 58 percent who are the same or better, and that's not a bad figure at all.

People are still worried about inflation, and President Biden still gets hit harder on that issue than President Trump, with 38 percent blaming the Biden administration's policies for inflation, as opposed to 34 percent blaming Trump policies, and 19 percent answering "both equally."

But then, there's this:

Yet that's balanced out for Mr. Trump today by continued majority approval on immigration and on his deportation program, specifically. That comes especially — but not exclusively — from his Republican base, many of whom say that's just as important as the economy in their evaluations.

It is in the issue of immigration that President Trump still has a lead. 53 percent of respondents approve of the Trump administration's immigration policies, with 47 percent disapproving. 58 percent approve of deporting illegal aliens, as opposed to 42 percent disapproving.

And, as far as overall approval ratings, President Trump's approval/disapproval is tied, 50-50.

You can view the entire survey result here.

Here's the thing, though: Democrats are still worried - cockroaches and skunks have higher approval ratings than the Democratic Party right now.

Worrying the left is worth doing, every day and twice on Sunday. And polls, we should note, are ephemeral things. They are interesting data points, but no more than that, and President Trump doesn't seem the sort to stick his finger in the air, sense the prevailing political winds, and then decide what to do. Whether anyone agrees with him or not, he is a man who has decided on his courses of action and who intends to run those courses, no matter what anyone thinks.

President Trump is still very, very early in his first term, and the midterms are still a year and a half away. If he's going to spend political capital pushing policies that he believes will cause some pain in the short term but help in the long term, now's the time to do it. Ronald Reagan, we might remember, in his first term, did much the same. It worked then. It might work again.

Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left's lies, new legislation wasn't needed to secure our border, just a new president.
