US Facility in Greenland Gets High-Profile Visit As VP Vance Addresses the Troops

On Friday, Vice President JD Vance spoke to U.S. Space Force Guardians on Greenland at Pituffik Space Base. He had plenty of words of encouragement for our troops in that distant place, and he made some very interesting remarks about the relationship between the United States and Greenland in a seeming appeal directly to the residents of that remote island.

First, he made a direct appeal to the people of Denmark and Greenland:

The vice president said in full:

Our message to Denmark is very simple. You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland. You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. That has to change. And because it hasn't changed, this is why President Trump's policy in Greenland is what it is. It's consistent with the first Trump administration, where you saw significant investments in Arctic security, and it will continue over the next four years under President Trump's leadership.

This is an interesting comment aimed directly at Denmark, stating, in effect, that Denmark has been neglecting Greenland. The point, "That has to change," set off in a sentence all of its own, is almost certainly deliberate.

The vice president continued:

And let me, finally, before I kick it over to the media, make one final comment about the people of Greenland. I, you know, the Colonel here, the base commander, who came here first as a second lieutenant, and I guess Colonel, this is your second duty station here, and we're proud of you and proud of all of you guys who are serving and helping keep us safe. You know, I heard a lot about the respect that our American troops show for the local Greenlandic population. They way that we make and create shelter for hunters and dogsledders, the way that we found ways to turn over traditional tribal land to some of the local populations to make sure that they're able to live in accordance with their values.

In this segment, the vice president does a little pivot: "Look what America has done for Greenland."

And, finally:

We respect, as the president said, in his State of the Union address, we respect the self-determination of Greenland - of Greenlanders, excuse me. We believe in the self-determination of the people and the population of Greenland. And our argument is very simple. It is not with the people of Greenland, who I think are incredible, and who have an incredible opportunity here, our argument really is with the leadership of Denmark, which has underinvested in Greenland, and underinvested in its security architecture. That simply must change. It is the policy of the United States that that will change, and I'm proud to be able to stand here with so many brave Americans to better understand the security mission, and better understand what you guys do each and every day. (For) that I'm grateful, for your service I'm even more grateful, I love you guys, I'm proud of you guys, and President Trump stands behind you, and will for the rest of his administration.

This presentation, while delivered to our Space Force Guardians (who inexplicably wear camouflage uniforms), was clearly directed at the people of Greenland. Vice President Vance's message was clear: America respects the self-determination of the people of Greenland, but here are several reasons why you would be better off being aligned with the United States than with Denmark.

In another segment, the vice president described Greenland's strategic place in the modern geopolitical landscape, where entry into the Arctic is becoming ever more vital.

The vice president said:

(There is) very strong evidence that both the Chinese and the Russians are interested in Greenland. And why wouldn't they be interested in Greenland? It's a beautiful place, it has incredible people, its geographic placement makes it very important for the national security of the United States. But for world security, what we have to recognize is that if the Chinese and the Russians are going to pursue their national interest, we need a president who's going to pursue the American national interest, and that means ensuring that Greenland is safe.

The press on Greenland is advancing. The administration is sending a message, a loud and clear message to Greenland, that they have been neglected by Denmark and would be better off under the United States. The message on self-determination is clear as well; America wants the people of Greenland to choose. Since Denmark has been refusing offers by the United States to buy Greenland since the 19th century, self-determination may well be the only way this can happen.

Greenland is and will remain a place of enormous strategic importance. It is the Atlantic Ocean's door into the Arctic, and it is drawing increasing attention not just from the United States but, as the vice president points out, from Russia and China as well. It's a safe bet that the Trump administration will continue making this appeal to the people of Greenland, and if they do not agree to join the United States, we can expect negotiations for an increased U.S. military presence on the island.

We shouldn't forget that Greenland also has significant mineral and energy resources, as well.

It's an interesting facet of geopolitics at the moment and will doubtless get more interesting.
