Greenland Gripes: Prime Minister Unhappy About Upcoming Usha Vance Visit

There's no pleasing some people. For example: Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has been anything but mute (see what I did there?) about Second Lady Usha Vance's upcoming visit to Greenland.

The thing is, some of his rhetoric on the topic is a little unhinged.

Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede described second lady Usha Vance's upcoming visit to his country as a dangerous and "very aggressive" provocation during a recent interview with a national news outlet in Greenland.

The visit by the second lady, one of her sons and an accompanying U.S. delegation was announced by the White House on Thursday. Per the announcement, Vance will spend the trip visiting historical sites, learning about the country's heritage, and attending Greenland's national dogsled race. Trump's national security advisor, Michael Waltz, will also visit the arctic country this week as part of the delegation traveling with the second lady, according to sources familiar with the trip.

While the National Security Advisor is, at least, an actual administration official, Usha Vance is not. She's married to one, but she's not. This is the kind of public-relations trip that the first and second ladies have always made, and always will, and nothing more. As for it being a provocation, we note that if Greenland really does consider a visit from Usha Vance to be "very aggressive," then it would appear that a troop of Cub Scouts armed with Swiss Army knives would be able to conquer the island in about three days.

This is a goodwill visit and nothing more. But PM Egede doesn't see it that way.

"We are now at a level where it can in no way be characterized as a harmless visit from a politician's wife, which is a prospect. Because what is the security advisor doing in Greenland?" Egede questioned in an interview with Greenland news outlet Sermitsiaq. "The only purpose is to show a demonstration of power to us, and the signal is not to be misunderstood. [Waltz] is Trump's confidential and closest advisor, and his presence in Greenland alone will certainly make the Americans believe in Trump's mission, and the pressure will increase after the visit."

Egede's condemnation of the trip from U.S. officials follows repeated calls by President Donald Trump for the U.S. to annex Greenland. Trump has stressed the importance of Greenland for national security purposes.

"I think it will happen," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office earlier this month during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

You can count me firmly on the skeptical side of the president's claim, here, but if there's one thing that President Trump has proven, it's that he generally means what he says and he has a way of getting what he wants done, so who knows? It seems likely that this is a negotiation tactic, though, and nothing more.

While Michael Waltz may well be engaging in some quiet negotiations over, say, a new naval/air base on Greenland, Usha Vance clearly is not doing any such thing. Getting upset about Usha Vance just doesn't make sense. PR Egede's claim that this is anything other than a "harmless visit," to use his words, is the purest corral litter, suitable only for enriching pastureland. He really needs to work on his sense of perspective.
