Trump to Maria Bartiromo: Democrats' Behavior at Speech Shows 'Something Wrong With Them'

In another segment of his appearance on the Fox Business show "Sunday Morning Futures," President Trump described to host Maria Bartiromo the Democratic members of Congress' reactions to his recent speech and his puzzlement over what they were thinking. In this, the president has a lot of company.

These are some questions for which we may never get a better answer than "They're nuts."

MARIA BARTIROMO: I was surprised at the Democrats' behavior the other night because you delivered among the most diverse, expanded, audience, Republicans, Democrats, Independents. So is it just the Democrat leadership that does not see that?
PRESIDENT TRUMP: There's something wrong with them. There's just something... I can't even believe it. They lost an election in a landslide. They were talking about men playing in women's sports.

When I looked the other night, I made a speech, the Republicans were going wild. And the Democrats were having their little signs up. They had little signs - little tiny signs. And I said, it's unbelievable. They don't get it. They don't get it now. And I think they're going to end up being a minor party if they keep going like this, 'cause people don't want to hear about these stupid ideas that they have. Transgender for everybody.

And again, the men in women's sports. What is that, a 90 to 10 deal? I don't even know who the 10 would be. But they're in there fighting for it. And I try to say to myself, because you always like to understand where your opponent is, whether its in business or anything else, is there something I don't understand? But we don't understand it.

And in that last statement, the president has hit the nub of the issue: We don't understand it.

And how could we understand it? What rational person finds it acceptable to allow young men, men who were mediocre male athletes but who have suddenly decided they can be outstanding female athletes, to now not only compete on women's teams but also share their locker rooms and showers?

The Democrats' behavior at the president's speech last week was nothing short of childish and petulant. It was a more petty display than Nancy Pelosi ripping up her copy of President Trump's State of the Union speech in his first term. Petty, childish displays - and displays of ignorance - seem to be the Democrats' modus operandi lately.

Granted, politics has always been a rough business - just ask Charles Sumner or Alexander Hamilton. But it generally hasn't been this petty or this childish in the modern era.

President Trump is correct; the Democrats will become a minor party unless they move their organization's Overton Window back towards the center. They will appeal to ivory-tower academics, to the dependency class, and some wealthy urban elites, as well as the 10 percent - honestly it's almost certainly less than that - who think it's perfectly OK to allow men in women's sports. But even more than that, they need to start acting like grownups.

President Trump's speech to a joint session of Congress has radical Democrats in panic mode, and their childish protests won't stop all of the winning.
