On Thursday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams promised to re-open an Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in the city's famed Riker's Island jail. Mayor Adams also vowed that the city would work with ICE on investigations of illegal alien criminals.
The promises came following a closed-door meeting with border czar Tom Homan.
Mayor Eric Adams vowed to reopen the shuttered ICE office at Rikers Island following a closed-door meeting with President Trump’s border czar Tom Homan Thursday.
Adams, in a statement, said he was eyeing an executive order to reestablish a federal immigration presence at the troubled jail complex – with a new mandate to work with the feds on investigations targeting migrant criminals and gangbangers.
“We are now working on implementing an executive order that will reestablish the ability for ICE agents to operate on Rikers Island – as was the case for 20 years,” he said. “But now, instead ICE agents would specifically be focused on assisting the correctional intelligence bureau in their criminal investigations, in particular those focused on violent criminals and gangs.”
This is a stark difference from officials in many of the country's other major cities, but a welcome one.
In fairness, we should note that the Trump Justice Department just ordered federal corruption charges against Mayor Adams dropped. The charges came on the heels of the Biden administration's disenchantment with Mayor Adams' disagreements with the administration over illegal immigration. RedState's own Sister Toldjah brought that story up on Monday.

Sister Toldjah writes:
Over time, Adams became more and more openly critical of the Biden-Harris administration's handling of the border crisis, which led to a frosty relationship between him and then-President Joe Biden and, as Adams and his supporters have claimed, retaliation in the form of the DOJ case against him.
A month after the indictment - which some political observers described as "disproportionate," Adams was surprisingly pushing back on the "fascist" rhetoric against Donald Trump, saying he had also faced similar false accusations. Around the same time, Trump noted that he predicted Adams' indictment well ahead of it due to the fact that Adams had pushed back on the Biden administration, saying they should be doing more to help.
What goes around, comes around, it seems.

It would have been fascinating to have been a fly on the wall in that closed-door meeting between Mayor Adams and Tom "The Hammer" Homan. The mayor has been expressing his concern over the cost of illegal immigration in New York, even with federal support that is now drying up. The federal charges he faced from the Biden administration seem very much like the Lavrentiy Beria comment, "Show me the man, I'll show you the crime." Mayor Adams, as Sister Toldjah writes, even observed that he and then-candidate Trump have faced the same kind of legal harassment. Tom "The Hammer" Homan may well be a welcome breath of fresh air in the Big Apple mayor's office right now.
Illegal alien criminals and gang-bangers will start finding New York to be much less of a sanctuary city henceforth.
We will continue to watch developments in New York City, and update you as events warrant.
