On Sunday, the (UK) Daily Mail reported that a Discord server called "School Massacres Discussion," frequented by Perry, Iowa shooter Dylan Butler, had been reported to the FBI. The FBI requested more information but took no further action.
The gunman who opened fire on Perry High School last week appears to have posted on the social media site Discord about 'gearing up' moments before the attack.
Dylan Butler, 17, killed sixth grader Ahmir Jolliff, 11, and injured four other students and three staff members before he turned the gun on himself last Thursday.
Police are currently reviewing Butler's use of social media and tech platforms, including Discord, a source told NBC News.
Butler posted a video to TikTok from an account with the username 'tooktoomuch' in the minutes leading up to the shooting. A Discord account with a similar name, 'took2much' appears to also belong to the shooter. A Discord spokesperson told the outlet they believe the account belonged to Butler.
The Discord account reportedly posted about being at the school and being ready 'for what's to come.'

While the TikTok messages described above were posted immediately before the shooting, Butler had been active on the Discord server "School Massacres Discussion," which had been flagged to the FBI in November, weeks before Butler's shooting spree. It is unclear as to whether Butler was named in the report to the FBI or any of his specific remarks forwarded, but while the FBI did request information, they took no further action — including failing to notify local law enforcement.
'The user was also part of a chatroom dedicated to discussing school shootings called "School Massacres Discussion,"' a Discord user who saw the user in the chat told NBC.
The Discord user said they had flagged the chatroom to the FBI in November, after which an FBI agent reached out over email and asked for more information.
The user emailed the FBI agent screenshots of the server but did not hear back. The chatroom was closed before the shooting.
What with all the controversy over "assault weapons," it's interesting to note that Butler used no such weapon; he did use a shotgun and a handgun, both of which he could not obtain legally, and as of this writing, it is unclear where he obtained the weapons.
Butler was a senior at Perry High School and was armed with a pump-action shotgun and handgun - both of which are illegal for a 17-year-old to obtain in Iowa.
He also had a rudimentary explosive device - which was undetonated and was later rendered safe by fire marshals.
The Perry mass shooting, while no "assault weapon" was involved, does have some key things in common with similar attacks:
- The perpetrator was previously known to law enforcement. In this case, a chatroom Butler reportedly frequented was reported to the FBI, an institutionally fossilized, highly partisan agency that took only minimal action.
- The perpetrator clearly had mental health issues.
- The perpetrator chose a safe free-fire zone, in this case, a school, a "gun-free" zone.
- The perpetrator, once he realized armed resistance was imminent, took his own life.
Investigation of the case is still ongoing.
