Welcome to the final week of October, which means it's getting a bit cold in the state of Michigan. I know because I live here, just to make sure we are clear on that point, and I have a clue about what is happening in the not-so-Great Lake State. When I'm not freezing my derrière off.
As I was breezing through the local paper and catching up over the past couple of weeks, I caught this about outgoing Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who can NOT run for a third term.
From the hometown paper, the Detroit News...
Whitmer is in the last two years of her second term as governor and she cannot run again because of term limits. While she is seen by many as a potential candidate, she said she is focused on her current work as governor.
The last governor we had run for a third term was Republican John Engler, and he was the most solid governor of my lifetime. However, thankfully, we will not have a chance for Whitmer and a third term.
Yet Gretchen keeps getting mentioned in every article about who will be running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2028. That will undoubtedly increase when she officially leaves the governor's office on January 1st of 2027, just a little over a year from now.
I was on a thread earlier this year or late last year that was debating whether or not Whitmer would run, and they thought that she would do the opposite of what one of the previous governors of the State of Michigan would do — her predecessor, Jennifer Granholm.
The only issue I brought up at the time in the thread (because I'm a nerd) was that Granholm was never actually eligible to run for president because she had actually been born in Canada, not in the good ole United States of America.
(Insert sad music)
The good old U.S. Constitution bars foreigners from becoming president by requiring that a president be a natural-born citizen. This requirement, found in Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution, means a person who is not a U.S. citizen at birth, and who acquired citizenship later through naturalization, is ineligible for the presidency. Sorry, Jenny from the Canadian block.
Let's get back to Gretch and what she is doing...
She says she is not sure if she really wants to run for POTUS. With other Democrats making POTUS noise, about how they MAY want to explore the possibility of exploring the possibility of running, Gretchen may think the field is already too crowded. Thankfully, my colleague Ward Clark covered that story here: Gavin Newsom Now 'Looking at' 2028 Presidential Run.
“I don’t know if I need to be the main character in the next chapter, but I want to have a hand in writing it,” she said. “And I think I’ve got an important vantage point as the governor of an important swing state.”
Even if Whitmer had the itch, her at times agreeing with Trump and feeling at liberty to reach out to the administration and communicate as she has, would (probably) not fly well with the hard-core lefties in the Democrat Party now.
So she had to throw a monkey wrench in somewhere, and thankfully, it was found later in said article.
Whitmer also had a grim warning for Michigan's economy, which is deeply connected to the auto sector. Parts are often shipped across the border between Canada and the U.S. multiple times in the manufacturing process, resulting in multiple tariff payments. Whitmer said the ripple effects are being felt by consumers in mortgage payments, grocery bills and retirement savings.
“This really is a dire moment in manufacturing,” she said.
Whitmer had other points to pick with Trump. She rejected Trump's recent claims that violence comes from left-leaning politics, drawing on her own experience with political violence. She suggested that Trump may seek an unconstitutional third term but believes the law will stop him. And while vague, she spoke in support of the freedom to disagree peacefully.
Whitmer is not wrong about the Michigan economy being tied to the auto industry. With the General Motors announcement a couple of days ago of more people being laid off, it makes us a bit jittery here in Michigan, even though the overall economy in the country is doing well.
However, what would help this state more than anything is having a pro-business person as governor in Lansing come January of 2027. Hopefully, that will happen.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
