Uh Oh: New Canadian Prime Minister Calls for Snap Election, While Blaming President Trump for 'Crisis'

Well, here we go.

As I wrote about last week, right here on the pages of RedState, the rumor over in Canada (right across the Detroit River from me) was that the new Prime Minster Mark Carney was going to call a SNAP election. Essentially, what that means in a parliamentary system is that they're going to call for an election sooner than set out in the law, to try to take advantage of polling that favors the current government. Canada's New Prime Minister Will Call for Elections As Soon As End of April

The new polling article I wrote just a couple of days ago was right here.

New Liberal Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney Gets a Boost Before National Election Is Called

So when I read this article right HERE that shows polling since Trudeau has stepped down has tilted into the factor of the liberals once again after Son of Fidel stepped down, I was not shocked.

In January, Canadian pollsters and political pundits struggled to find fresh ways to describe the bleak prospects of Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party, musing whether it would be a wipeout of existential proportions, or merely a catastrophic blowout. But fresh polling released by three companies this week shows a stunning reversal of fortunes for the party: newly minted prime minister Mark Carney’s Liberals are projected to secure a majority government. The outcome has little precedent in Canadian history, reflecting the outsized role played by an unpredictable US president, and it underscores the incentives for Carney to call a snap election in the coming days.On Tuesday, the political analyst Philippe Fournier updated his closely watched website 338Canada, which tracks and aggregates national polls, converting those figures into projected election results.

For the first time, his projection showed the Liberals with a 55% chance of a majority government. In January, the odds stood at less than 1%.

Canadians once again have a parliamentary system, which means national elections must be held at least once every five years, but the party in charge, along with the prime minister who is serving, gets to determine when an election can occur. My understanding of it is that they must hold a national election by November of this year, but they could hold it sooner and schedule it after Parliament reconvenes at the end of this month.

The new report right HERE gives the basic details of how this works.

Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney is likely to call a national election for 28 April, potentially as soon as this Sunday, multiple news outlets report.

With Canada's businesses reeling from a trade dispute with the US, Carney - a former two-time central banker - is expected to pitch himself as the candidate best equipped to take on Donald Trump.

The 60-year-old political newcomer took over as leader of the Liberal Party after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped down from his nine-year term.

The prime minister's announcement to call an election and request the dissolution of Parliament will kick off a five-week campaign for Carney and his political opponents.

The prediction has come true, which I read about right HERE:

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a snap election - saying he needed a strong mandate to deal with the threat that Donald Trump's tariffs pose to the economy.

Unelected Carney, who was made leader of the Canadian Liberal party after Justin Trudeau stepped down, is attempting to sweep the polls and capitalize on the recovery the party has made in recent weeks.

The next election was not due until October 20, but it will now go ahead before the end of next month on April 28, Carney announced on Sunday.

So far so good...

Carney took a swipe at Trump during the speech - saying that the GOP leader has caused the most significant 'crisis of our lifetimes' and threatened Canadian freedom. This is in relation to Trump's desire to make the country the US's 51st state.

'We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,' Carney said.

'There is so much more to do to secure Canada. To invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada. That's why I'm asking for a strong positive mandate from my fellow Canadians.'

That last part right there, about Trump and Canada becoming the 51st state, is probably not going to sit well with POTUS 47. In case people across the world have not yet taken note, Donald Trump loves to mix it up with people who disagree with him.

Also, blaming Trump for a crisis is not going to sit well at all, I'm guessing.

I happen to think that Canada becoming part of the United States is a really bad idea for our country politically, and I wrote about that right here. OPINION: The US Absorbing Canada Is a Bad Idea for Future Elections, So Let's Finish These Other Goals

If Canada and its provinces become part of the United States of America, Republicans would probably never win the White House and/or Congress again. Now, I know some of my friends here in the deep blue state of Michigan would probably fight that notion, and say that if Canadians became Americans, they would just become more conservative.

I don't think that is the route that would necessarily happen. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't.

Canada is a large welfare state, and its citizens lean left of center. That would radically change the way that we do elections in these states, and would change the Electoral College to make sure that a Republican like Donald Trump would never win again.

That our Canadian cousins lean more left and want to elect people like Justin Trudeau is just fine. I already live in Michigan and deal with a certain amount of that, so I don't want to inject 40 million Canadians into the US political system, blocking any chance of Republicans ever sitting in the White House again in my lifetime or controlling one chamber of Congress.

I'm not willing to make that trade-off for all the minerals in the Great White North or all the tea in China.

The election will be held on April 28th, which is just 36 days away, and we will finally see if American and Canadian relations thaw out after that.

Every single day, here at RedState, we will stand up and FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT against the radical left and deliver the conservative reporting our readers deserve.
