Warning: This post has no politics, intra-party fighting, presidential blunders, or otherwise grinchy news. Instead, it's all about the Christmas spirit.
Just as we despaired this week of any good news coming down the pike, along comes little Milo and his pure joy at getting a role in the school Christmas nativity play. It's not just any role, mind you, it's "a classic one." For those of you who have watched "Love, Actually," it has shades of the nativity lobster.
Was Milo going to be Joseph? No. Perhaps one of the three wise men? Heck no. Milo nabbed the role he clearly thought was the perfect one for him: third door holder.
Without a doubt, that is a classic role. Here's how it played out:
MILO: Guess what I am for the nativity? It's a classic one.
MOM: Classic role, is it? Classic part?
MILO: Yeah.
MOM: Joseph?
MILO: No.
MOM: One of the three wise me?
MILO: No.
MOM: But it's a classic part?
MILO: Yeah.
MOM: Okay, you tell me, then ...
MILO: I'm door holder number three. I'll be holding doors.
The video of him announcing the news to his mother is incredibly adorable. He's so very pleased.
He was so excited to hear about his role in the Christmas play! He’s teaching us something… pic.twitter.com/GClUcoy0lJ

Look at all that pride and glee in what is unquestionably an important role in the nativity story. Here's how Milo sees his role, which will require him to wear brown, unfolding, as he "probably" will be holding the door for Joseph and Mary: "I'm a door holder. Get in there. Let's go." Milo isn't playing around here, this door-holding stuff is serious business in Bethlehem.
Milo has a healthy dose of Christmas spirit going on, as he looks forward to doing his part in reenacting the birth of baby Jesus. It's the purest kind of joy, the exact kind of joy we Christians should be feeling with the start of Advent on Sunday. It's the innocence and excitement of childhood, and it just shines from his face.
What makes this story even better is the absolute joy Milo gets from the very humble role of door holder. He sees, just as Jesus himself did, the value in even the humblest of people in the humblest of professions. Milo didn't need the accolades of a starring role, he was happy to be holding the door for the main players. If that doesn't sum up the reason for the season, what does?
Milo's spirit was clearly contagious, if these comments on the video are any indication:
- "I've watched this probably 10 times already. I love his enthusiasm. Dude is going to be the best door holder in the history of nativities."
- "This youngster is pumped up. He’s going to make room in The Inn!"
- "God bless him there are no small parts."
It's a shame we won't be able to see Milo's performance as door holder number three, but we certainly can take his enthusiasm for the season with us as we head back into our crazy world of politics and conflict. A little Christmas spirit with a healthy dose of childhood innocence -- and possibly some spiked egg nog -- is the perfect antidote for what's currently ailing society.
