Chris Christie on a Trump Versus Mueller Sit-Down: Lie to a Federal Agent, You Could Go to Jail

Former Trump errand boy and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has some advice for his old pal: DON’T DO IT!

The “it” in question would be to sit down with special counsel Robert Mueller.

(This seems to be the general consensus among those who know Trump.)

Trump has insisted that he wants to sit with Mueller and plead his case. He feels he can convince him that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russia. This goes against what his former lead counsel, John Dowd thought was best for him, and Trump’s inability to take sound counsel is thought to be part of the reason Dowd left his legal team.

What Trump seems to be forgetting (as do many of his devotees), is that Mueller’s authority goes beyond simply collusion, so that wouldn’t necessarily be his only focus.

Speaking on Sunday morning, Christie offered:

“One of the things that makes the president who he is is that he’s a salesman, and salesmen at times tend to be hyperbolic,” Christie said during a panel on ABC’s “This Week.”

Or they lie. “Hyperbolic” is just a euphemism.

“That’s OK when you’re working on Congress. It is not OK when you’re sitting talking to federal agents because, 18 U.S.C. 1001 is false statements to federal agents, that’s a crime, that can send you to jail.”

How is it that everybody who knows Trump feels it’s more likely than not that Trump would lie under oath, if given the chance?

Right now, there’s no one in Trump’s bare-bones legal team who want to see that happen, without some heavy conditions.

As Trump searches, seemingly in vain, for attorneys who don’t care if they get paid or not, and who relish the challenge of a client who will ignore all their advice, his current attorney’s are attempting to work out some scenario where Trump answers Mueller’s questions, either in writing or in a face-to-face interview.
