Senator Ben Sasse and #NeverTrump Targeted in Nebraska

Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse has been one of the more vocal proponents of the #NeverTrump crusade.

Sasse became the voice of those who are disgusted and disheartened by a Trump nomination (see: all those with IQs not languishing below 80) back in February 2016, when he posted on his Facebook account about the possibility of Trump as nominee:

“If Donald Trump becomes the Republican nominee, my expectation is that I will look for some third candidate — a conservative option, a Constitutionalist.”

With the nightmare realized, Sasse has not softened his opinion.

That refusal to back down has caused a rumbling in the underground of Nebraska politics.

A prominent Nebraska political operative — who is the nephew of senior GOP Sen. Deb Fischer — is behind a move to publicly rebuke the anti-Trump movement. Sam Fischer has issued a proposed resolution — set for a vote at the convention — declaring that the state party will refuse to support any Republican officeholder who opposes the GOP presidential nominee or agitates for a third-party candidate.

Senator Sasse wasn’t named, specifically, but everyone familiar with his position is reading between the lines. The belief is also that Senator Fischer is in approval of the move, even as her chief of staff deny that she has been a part of any resolutions that will be presented at the state’s GOP convention.

Reached via text message, Sam Fischer — who advised one of Sasse’s GOP primary opponents during his successful 2014 Senate bid — described his proposal as “not a censure” and insisted his aunt “has nothing to do with this.”

“I did this on my own,” he said, adding that he presented it to the state convention’s Resolutions Committee, which gave it unanimous approval. “I am not actively campaigning for votes. Senator Sasse is upside down. Please correct your information.”

It seems that battle lines are being drawn.
