Apparently, white supremacy is the major problem facing America today. If you support President Trump, even if your support is so tepid that you plan on wearing a paper bag over your head and holding your nose when you vote in November, you, my friend, are a white supremacist. If you want to enforce our immigration laws? White supremacist. Do you think there are a lot of social pathologies in our inner cities? You just outed yourself as a white supremacist. This has become standard fare on the campaign trail this year:

Hold that thought, Mr. Biden.

White supremacy is not limited to Trump and his supporters.

Earlier today, my colleague, Joe Cunningham, posted on Joe Biden’s observation that poor kids are just as smart a white kids.

This gaffe, as Joe notes, was rocketed out by the Trump immediate response folks (I have to say, I’m really impressed by what they’re doing).

Now, the same folks are reminding us that Joe Biden has a history of problematic statements on race…I might even say they could lead one to think he was an actual white supremacist. This is from Biden on the stump in Iowa in 2007.

BIDEN: Again, you have to start off with what they start off with. There’s less than one percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than four of five percent that are minorities. What is in Washington?

SUPER HELPFUL WHITE SUPREMACIST IN AUDIENCE: I think it’s a vast majority.

BIDEN: Yeah. [Biden actually snickers] So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you’re dealing with,” Biden told the Washington Post at the time.

According to FoxNews, he continued:

“When you have children coming from dysfunctional homes, when you have children coming from homes where there’s no books, where the mother from the time they’re born doesn’t talk to them — as opposed to the mother in Iowa who’s sitting out there and talks to them, the kid starts out with a 300 word larger vocabulary at age three. Half this education gap exists before the kid steps foot in the classroom.”

So black families and minority families are dysfunctional, the mother doesn’t talk to her kids, and there are no books…and white families are just the opposite.

I understand the point Biden is trying to make here and the point he was trying to make in Joe’s post. But the connecting facts have nothing to do with race and everything to do with socio-economic class. I can tell you from my experience in Eastern Kentucky, that the only thing that makes large swaths of that area different from West Baltimore is melanin, population density, and preferred choice of illegal drug.

But we are beyond the point of giving the benefit of the doubt, particularly to people who refuse to show the same grace towards us and who shamelessly paint an entire political party, one that is at least as committed to racial equality as the Democrats, as white supremacists.

The real white supremacy is equating poor with non-white. The real white supremacy is believing that white families are uniquely well ordered while non-white families are universally dysfunctional. Sad to say, in terms of white supremacy, Joe Biden is showing all the signs of holding deep beliefs that non-whites are inherently inferior and he is addled enough to voice those views. He’s the last person who should be making that accusation at any other person.
