Two of the main leaders of the recognized government, former political prisoner Leopoldo Lopez, and de jure President Juan Guaido, have abandoned the struggle.
Lopez and his family have taken asylum in the Chilean embassy. Guaido is sheltering at La Carlota Air Base, which is under control of forces loyal to him. There are reports that five supreme court justices are also in the Chilean embassy.
