  • House Appropriations, Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee — Oversight Hearing of the U.S. Department of the Treasury [Scott Bessent is testifying]

In addition, several House committees are set to have private, Republican-only meetings to discuss the Trump agenda, and then, later in the afternoon, GOP leadership, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), "will meet with moderate House Republicans at 4:30 p.m. to discuss Medicaid spending cuts and programmatic changes that party leaders want in the reconciliation package."

White House What's Up

Tuesday, President Donald Trump will meet and have lunch with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Later in the afternoon, he'll participate in a "FIFA Task Force Meeting." Then, he'll participate in a "Swearing-In Ceremony for the Assistant to the President, Senior Advisor and Special Envoy." (I'll confess, I'm not certain to whom this is referring, and now I'm curious.)

Vice President JD Vance shared a video of his recent visit to Nucor Steel Berkeley, in South Carolina.

Full Court Press...

In a surprise to no one, the plaintiffs in the cases involving the United States Agency for Global Media, which oversees multiple federally funded broadcast networks, including Voice of America, have filed an emergency petition for a rehearing en banc with the D.C. Circuit Court after a stunning Saturday decision by the Circuit. The court has given the administration until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday to file a response to the petition, so we could see a ruling from the court as early as Tuesday evening (in terms of whether or not they grant the petition for rehearing).

The trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs is underway in New York. And already, there's some drama.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Keep an eye out for trade deal news from the White House, as well.

MORNING MUSING

There's been a ton of focus lately on federal district court judges and decisions that seemingly are far more about opposing Trump than following the law. An astute commenter recently asked me how we got to this place, with judges, all of whom have graduated law school and many of whom have served on the bench for years, (apparently) determining they needn't follow the law and exceeding the scope of their authority. I'm going to borrow a bit from my response on that and share my own take on what we're seeing from these district (and in some cases, appellate) courts:

A lot of it lies at the feet of the law schools themselves. I attended and graduated from law school in the early 90s, and even then, the vast majority of students (and faculty) were quite liberal. Law school and the legal profession (somewhat like academia in general) are a self-reinforcing eco-sphere — liberals are drawn to higher education and the profession, which, in turn, is then full of liberals (and leftists).

That said, I would submit that the vast majority of judges who are issuing these decisions believe that they ARE following the law. But they're substituting their own personal feelings and judgment, and their antipathy toward all things Trump (who's brash and disruptive and so very gauche) is blinding them. And the more their worldview (which, don't you know, is so very erudite and unassailable) and authority are challenged, the more miffed (and dug in) they're getting.

Essentially, ego and hubris are trumping (no pun intended) objective analysis for many of our black-robed friends. What the judiciary is doing then is showing their hind ends. And I am here for the spanking I hope is imminent.

LIGHTER FARE

I have to admit, I'm impressed.
