Good morning, and welcome to RedState's "Morning Minute" — a brief glimpse at which stories are trending at the moment and a look ahead at what the day may bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to kickstart your day.
TOP O' THE MORNIN'
Harris is literally everything she is complaining about, and that's why we need to "turn the page" from her.
Brian Trascher of United Cajun Navy Confirms a Blackhawk Did 'Rotor Wash' a Western NC Resource Site
On the evening of Sunday, October 6, a helicopter "rotor washed" a POD center where the United Cajun Navy was distributing supplies and giving relief to the people impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Fox News Makes Insanely Smart Move Just in Time for the Election
The rise in the number of Hispanics seeking out conservative news sources like Fox News dovetails with the number of Hispanic voters seeking a home in the Republican Party.
WHAT'S ON TAP?
Today on Capitol Hill...
Yesterday, I raised the possibility of a U.S. Senate with Chuck Schumer (D-NY) no longer as the majority leader. But if the Republicans do take back the Senate, it won't be with Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as the leader. It's down to John Thune (SD), John Cornyn (TX), and Rick Scott (FL) vying to replace him. But their fellow senator, Mike Lee (UT), has suggested some reforms for the post-McConnell era that may well be worth considering. Lee's suggestions are aimed at limiting "the next Senate Republican leader’s ability to block rank-and-file conservative senators from getting votes on amendments to major bills." Let's hope we get to see what that looks like.
White House What's Up
At noon, President Joe Biden will receive a briefing on Hurricanes Milton and Helene — and surprise! Vice President Kamala Harris will be there for that one. In the afternoon, he'll hold a call with rabbis to commemorate the Jewish High Holidays. After that, he'll greet H.E. Simon Harris, Taoiseach of Ireland. And then he'll deliver remarks on Hurricane Milton.
The Homestretch
As noted above, Harris will be attending the mid-day Milton/Helene briefing. After that, she heads out to Las Vegas, Nevada. Second (not a) Gentleman Doug Emhoff will deliver remarks at a campaign event in Atlanta Wednesday evening. Running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will be campaigning in Tucson, Arizona, while his wife, Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz, will campaign in Beloit and Madison, Wisconsin.
Former President Donald Trump will deliver remarks in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Wednesday afternoon, followed by a rally in Reading in the evening. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, will also be campaigning in Tucson on Wednesday.
Full Court Press...
It's a third day of the 2024 term at the Supreme Court as the justices hear oral argument in the case of Glossip v. Oklahoma, which is a death penalty appeal involving several issues:
(1) Whether the state’s suppression of the key prosecution witness’ admission that he was under the care of a psychiatrist and failure to correct that witness’ false testimony about that care and related diagnosis violate the due process of law under Brady v. Maryland and Napue v. Illinois; (2) whether the entirety of the suppressed evidence must be considered when assessing the materiality of Brady and Napue claims; (3) whether due process of law requires reversal where a capital conviction is so infected with errors that the state no longer seeks to defend it; and (4) whether the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals' holding that the Oklahoma Post-Conviction Procedure Act precluded post-conviction relief is an adequate and independent state-law ground for the judgment.
MORNING MUSING
Discernment. Man, is it critical. As much as I roll my eyes at the sudden pearl-clutching by those in power over "misinformation" and "disinformation" and will fight tooth and nail against censorship and the suppression of speech, scrolling through social media (primarily X/Twitter) can be its own frustrating endeavor attempting to swim and sort through a wide variety of claims — some wilder than others. Use your noggin. Look for reliable sources. (Hint: These tend not to be the ones who start every other post with "BREAKING!1!" or who rarely, if ever, provide links to back up their claims.) Beware the engagement farmers. Do your own digging if something seems too good (or too bad) to be true. And pray for the wisdom and discernment to sort the wheat from the chaff.
