For those of us who view the holiday season through the lens of faith, the days leading up to Christmas inspire us to contemplate the arrival of our Lord and Savior. If you’re like me, you wrestle a bit with keeping your focus where it belongs, because the distractions are myriad: presents to buy, parties to plan or attend, potential travel to book, and year-end tasks to address.
On some level, we know the importance of remaining mindful of the “reason for the season,” but it’s easy to get swept up in the trappings and forget what lies at its heart.
Typically, when I do think of the meaning behind it all, I do so in terms of Christ’s arrival itself and thankfulness for the wondrous gift given to us by God. Angels sing of His glory. We sing of bright stars and uncertain shepherds and wise men and a virgin mother.
We sing “Joy to the World” to celebrate His coming. But in that very same song, we sing a prayer that every heart will make room for Him. Far too few do. And even those who mean to often fall short. “Sorry, Jesus, no room at the inn - things are crazy busy this time of year!”
Now imagine if every heart did indeed prepare Him room.
What cause to rejoice — to repeat the sounding joy — that would be.
