Moore to the Point - Thoughtless Thought Bubbles

You know how comic strips feature thought bubbles above or beside the characters’ heads? It’s a helpful way to clue the reader in on the joke or hook without the character actually verbalizing their comments. I think we’ve reached a point where we need more of that in real life. Thanks to social media, there’s too much “saying the quiet part out loud” – and not nearly enough shutting the heck up.

Abraham Lincoln is often credited with the  quote: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt,” though the quote itself is likely based on the Proverb: “Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.” Either way, there’s wisdom to be had in learning to keep one’s own counsel.

There’s a lot of talk these days about the “dangers” of misinformation and disinformation and malinformation. I think what we’re really suffering from is hyperinformation – and hyperexpression. We’re literally drowning in TMI.

I recognize the irony of someone who speaks and writes for a living asserting that, but honestly, wouldn’t we all be in a happier, healthier place if we weren’t privy to everyone’s thought bubbles on everything, everywhere, and all the time?
