RedState's Brad Slager wrote earlier about how the story New York City's Democrat Socialist mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, told about his aunt and how she allegedly felt fearful getting on an NYC subway after the 9-11 terrorist attacks was starting to fall apart.
In a speech given last Friday on what he described as "Islamophobia," Mamdani proclaimed that he wanted to "speak to the memory of my aunt who stopped taking the subway after September 11 because she did not feel safe in her hijab."
But as Slager noted, internet detectives found out more about Masuma Mamdani, who is actually the assemblyman's only living aunt. "In his aunt’s biographies online, she is not seen wearing the head covering," Brad wrote. "But more than this, her professional career shows she was a resident in Tanzania in the years before and after the attacks."

In an update to this story, Mamdani, after being questioned on the discrepancies, now says it was his father's late cousin he was referring to:
“I was speaking about Zehra fuhi, my father’s cousin, who passed away a few years ago,” Mamdani told reporters about the relative, whom he said he affectionately called his aunt.
Fuhi means paternal aunt in Urdu and Hindi.
The “aunt” who Zohran Mamdani said was too afraid to wear her hijab on the subways after 9/11 is actually a deceased distant cousin, he clarified Monday.

Riiiight. That seems like a rather important detail to get wrong, no?
I feel like that's a pretty important detail you wouldn't get wrong about a beloved family member. https://t.co/4LQBCW8HYs

Incredibly, Mamdani then tried to insinuate that critics who raised the issue, including his main mayoral race opponent, former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), were engaging in Islamophobia by questioning his story:
“For the takeaway from my more than 10-minute address about Islamophobia in this race and in this city, to be the question of my aunt, tells you everything you need to know about Cuomo and his inability to reckon with a crisis of his own making,” he said.

Just incredible. Mamdani can repeatedly question Cuomo on how many mosque visits he did or did not make as governor, can share laughs with and boast about meeting with an unindicted co-conspirator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombings (who is a contributor to Mamdani's campaign), but if you turn the questions around on him, you're an Islamophobe or something.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think NYC is about to go down an extraordinarily dark path with Mamdani at the helm, despite the many red flags. As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water...
