In a move that has sent many Congressional Democrats over the edge, Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced in a floor speech Thursday night that he was caving on the issue of the continuing resolution, and would support it - with the rationale being that a government shutdown would allegedly give President Trump too much power.
"[A] shutdown would give Donald Trump and Elon Musk carte blanche to destroy vital government services at a significantly faster rate than they can right now," Schumer proclaimed, as we previously reported, while also adding later in so many words that he was worried his party might get blamed.
"President Trump and Republican leaders would like nothing more than to pull us into the mud of a protracted government shutdown," Schumer said. "For Donald Trump, a shutdown would be a gift."

While rumors are already swirling about a possible 2028 challenge for Schumer in the form of Rep. Alexandia Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Trump took a victory lap of sorts in a message shared on his Truth Social platform Friday morning, praising Schumer for having the "guts" to fold (LOL):
Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took “guts” and courage! The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation. A non pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights. Again, really good and smart move by Senator Schumer. This could lead to something big for the USA, a whole new direction and beginning! DJT
I don't think it could get much worse for Schumer at this point among members of his party with incoming praise from the Democrats' Public Enemy Number One. Trump no doubt knew exactly what he was doing here, adding more fuel to the Democrat fire at a time when they're already floating the idea of Schumer being primaried in three years.
In any event, what comes next on the CR is anyone's guess. But what's not up for debate anymore is how deeply Schumer has damaged his standing among the House and Senate Democrat caucuses respectively, which is where talk of ousting him in the 2028 election cycle is especially relevant.
Though Schumer has decades of experience, an AOC challenge would be one he should treat seriously. After all, she made it to Congress by defeating a deeply entrenched Democrat leader (then-House Democrat Caucus Chair Joseph Crowley) back in 2018, and if the money, mood, and sentiment of a majority of New York voters was for "change" on the Senate side, she'd have a decent shot of defying the odds once again.
As for me? I'll be over here in the cheap seats, munching on some popcorn because that race would be hella fun to watch play out.
