Mass. Dems Begin Some Grotesque Back-Patting After ‘Humanitarian Crisis’ of 50 Migrants Averted

It’s been fascinating watching the myriad reactions from hysterical Democrats since Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew two planeloads of migrants last Thursday to “sanctuary community” Martha’s Vineyard in deep-blue Massachusetts.

While some have been hilariously predictable, others have been downright disturbing and ridiculous, like the “kidnapping” allegation California Gov. Gavin Newsom made (along with a call for the DOJ to investigate DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on those grounds) and the “human trafficking” one that came from twice-failed Democratic candidate for president Hillary Clinton among others.

In the midst of all the fanatical caterwauling from the left and their media allies over both DeSantis and Abbott utterly humiliating their staunchest critics by assisting them in exposing their open borders hypocrisy for all the country to see has been some rather grotesque back-patting from Massachusetts Democrats and more broadly, national Dems.

There are many examples of such, but we’ll start with Exhibit A – a piece published Saturday in which CNN reported how the “44-hour visit” allegedly left an “indelible mark on Martha’s Vineyard,” with one Democrat claiming the migrants “enriched us”:

Rachel Self, an immigration attorney from Boston, also drew applause.

“We’ve got their backs and they are not alone. And to that end, I would like to specifically thank Trader Fred for donating underwear because Martha’s Vineyard doesn’t have a Walmart down the street,” she said, referring to the migrants and a local retailer who stepped up to help them.

On Friday, after the migrants had left Martha’s Vineyard, a volunteer with the Harbor Homes nonprofit, Sean O’Sullivan, disassembled the folding cots that 18 of the male migrants slept on in the parish hall.

“The year round community is very strong because you are kind of isolated here – whether it’s the ferry or the bad weather, you’re stuck here,” he said. “We’re used to helping each other. We’re used to dealing with people in need and we’re super happy – like they enriched us, we’re happy to help them on their journey.”

At the empty parish house hours after the migrants had departed, Charles Rus, the church organist and music director, said the place felt lonely.

Charles Rus, the music director at St. Andrew’s, lives on the upper floor of the parish house where the migrants stayed. He said now the place feels lonely.

“The governor of Florida got it wrong,” he said. “I think he thought we wouldn’t know what to do. And actually people here really give a damn. They really care.”

When reading human interest stories like this, it’s important to keep things in perspective.

As the story noted, the migrants – around 50 at last check – were not even there for two days. During that time, panic set in among the affluent white liberals in the admittedly “isolated” community as a “humanitarian crisis” was declared after self-important Democrats declared that the migrants simply couldn’t stay, ostensibly because they didn’t have the resources to accommodate them, though as others have pointed out there were plenty of large homes on the island that could have been used to house the migrants for more than just what ultimately amounted to an overnight stay.

Then, after feeding them for less than two days and giving them a place to sleep, Martha’s Vineyard – perhaps feeling their “duty” had been fulfilled – these same people then patted the migrants on the head and had them bused to a Cape Cod military base complete with assistance from the state National Guard.

For this, we’re supposed to believe they should be eligible for a Nobel Peace Prize or something?

“New England progressives nominating themselves for a Nobel Peace Prize after commingling w/ migrants for nearly 2 full days,” quipped Grabien founder Tom Elliott in response to the CNN story.

“The residents are going to be talking about their courageous heroism these past 36 hours for years to come. Like that time in 1998 they saved that box turtle which was stuck in the road and all took turns watching over it that night and setting it free the next morning,” predicted A. Newsman.

As noted in the headline, all the back-patting is pretty grotesque (not to mention offensive) considering that what Mass. Dems were given to handle is not even a drop in the bucket compared to what states like Texas and Florida are given every day to deal with when it comes to illegal immigrants pouring over the border and the Biden administration proceeding to dump many of them on unsuspecting communities where resources are already stretched thin.

You don’t see any of the people in those states who are in the business of helping migrants lining up for media interviews and proudly declaring “we did it!” They just try to do the best they can and don’t seek praise nor or they interested in scoring cool points. Then again, unlike in Massachusetts, virtue signaling is frowned upon in border and red states in favor of doing the actual hard work – which they’ve been doing on this issue for decades (again, unlike in MA), so that’s not exactly a surprise.

In any event, Massachusetts Dems are who they are, and that will never change. That said, it’s been nice to see their masks ripped off over the last several days, no question about it. Because as they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant.
