Pat Sajak Smacks Down Internet Shamers After Wild 'Wheel of Fortune' Segment Goes Viral

I know I’m preaching to the choir a bit here, but just to reiterate a point made by many people on both sides of the aisle in the past, longtime “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak – who is a conservative – is an absolute national treasure. He proved it again Wednesday in a pretty epic Twitter thread where he dunked on Internet shamers for piling on contestants of the show over a wild and frustrating-to-watch series of spins during the Tuesday episode that went viral.

The segment in question was about a common phrase that people who may not have known it at the time of the show’s airing (like the contestants, apparently) now know. It lasted for over two minutes and even with most of the letters on the screen, it took multiple tries by all of three players, some of who either spun to the “bankrupt” spot or “lose a turn” spot, before one finally figured it out.

Clips of the segment started cropping up on Twitter immediately after, with accounts like “Someone’s An Idiot” and others racing to add their voices to those who had already expressed how painful it was to watch the contestants continue to be baffled over a phrase that most people know.

Accordingly, the video clips made it to news and opinion websites, which ran with headlines in straight news and columnist pieces alike that included phrases like “epic fail” and “totally failed,” while others made sure to point out that the puzzle should have been “easy” to solve.

Sajak, however, had a different take and said so in a series of tweets posted Wednesday:

Sajak then directly addressed the shamers by pointing out that “mocking them online and calling them names” made critics look foolish considering the fact that the contestants are “good people in a bad situation under a kind of stress that you can’t begin to appreciate from the comfort of your couch.”

While “good-natured laughter” regarding the segment was “one thing,” Sajak urged viewers to “cut them some slack. Unless you’re there, you have no idea how different it is in the studio.”

“…it’s okay to laugh at the situation,” he went on to say, noting that he had engaged in some friendly teasing of the players in the past. “But have a little heart.”

He saved perhaps the most important part for last, advising people to keep all of this in mind because one day it might be them in the hot seat.

“After all, you may be there one day. And no one wants to be trending on Twitter.”

Ain’t that the truth?
