Sunday Update: A tweet reflecting on the service and sacrifice of the U.S. military was added to Harris’ Twitter account at 7 a.m.

Vice President Kamala Harris is just not very good at what she does.
She’s avoided visiting the southern border to date; despite being put in charge of dealing with the crisis by President Biden, she sounds like she doesn’t know what she’s talking about half the time, she cackles in order to get out of answering inconvenient questions, and she routinely dodges certain reporters because they supposedly “don’t understand” her.
And fresh off of her giving the commencement speech at the U.S. Naval Academy where she told some “jokes” that fell embarrassingly flat, Harris reminded us this weekend of another thing she’s not good at: messaging.
America is in the middle of a three-day holiday weekend, which most of us in this country refer to as the “Memorial Day holiday weekend.” It’s a weekend meant to spend relaxing with family and friends, and remembering the brave men and women of our armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy the freedoms we do today.
For government officials, especially, the weekend is supposed to be about honoring those heroes and amplifying respect and appreciation for them and their families, not indulging in the vapid narcissism we see so often on display by so-called “political leaders.”
But for Vice President Harris, this weekend was just a “long weekend” that gave her the opportunity to tweet a selfie:
Enjoy the long weekend. pic.twitter.com/ilGOrod4AW

President Biden’s “weekend” post wasn’t much better, but at least he did tweet a message of support for the military Friday:
Stay cool this weekend, folks. pic.twitter.com/Z2xOTekvUZ
— President Biden (@POTUS) May 29, 2021
To some people, this won’t be that big a deal, especially if she ends up posting a message on Memorial Day that falls in line with the reason for the holiday. But today’s tweet is understandably getting ratioed by a whole lot of people, including veterans who did not appreciate Harris making “the long weekend” all about her, rather than those who gave all in service to our country.
Is celebrating during the Memorial Day holiday weekend wrong and disrespectful? No. Though the holiday is about remembrance, it’s not about sitting at home for three days and being sad; although if you’re someone who has lost a loved one, it’s entirely understandable if that’s how you choose to spend it.
But is it right for elected officials to pretend this weekend is about nothing more than just Americans getting a day off work? Hell, no, it’s not, and Harris — or whoever runs her social media accounts for her — should damned well know better.
Harrison Fields, who is the comms director for Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.),was one of many who posted a timely reminder to Harris as to just the reason why we have the “long weekend”:
The reason why we get to “enjoy the long weekend.” https://t.co/1UqHO4aySp pic.twitter.com/JHNBdD3FSk

Harris’ tone-deaf tweet reminds me of all the times former President Barack Obama made every holiday and special occasion about him, always including a photo of himself — sometimes in place of the person or historic event we were supposed to be remembering.
It’s too bad Democrats don’t have any shame because if they did, Harris would feel quite a bit of it this Memorial Day holiday weekend. But they don’t and she doesn’t, and this is just another on a long list of examples that prove the point.
