There are two things Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) does especially well:

1) Confirm President Trump’s judicial nominees.
2) Trigger Democrats by confirming President Trump’s judicial nominees.

The Senate Majority Leader sat down on for an interview with Salem Radio’s Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday to discuss, among other things, the deep disagreements between House Democrats and Senate Republicans on the replenishing of the Paycheck Protection Program.

McConnell was also asked about judicial confirmations and if the Senate had a plan to get back to doing that anytime soon:

Hewitt: “… it wouldn’t be a conversation if we didn’t talk about judges. I know you folks are overwhelmed. You’ve done an amazing job. But our friend, Senator Graham, we’ve got to get him holding some hearings for Rick Richmond and nominees like John Flynn who aren’t even up there, and votes for Mark Scarsi. California is out of judges. When are we going to get back to hearings and votes?”

McConnell: “Well, the current plan is to go back in session on May the 4th. I haven’t seen anything that would discourage me from doing that. And as soon as we get back in session, we’ll start confirming judges again. We need to have hearings, and we need to confirm judges. Hugh, you and I have discussed this before. My motto for the year is leave no vacancy behind. That hasn’t changed. The pandemic will not prevent us from achieving that goal.”

Total beast mode.

In fact, McConnell confirmed earlier this month that he would continue to fill court vacancies even in the midst of the pandemic – and that included the next Supreme Court Justice, if necessary.

McConnell’s assurances yesterday that the Senate would soon be returning to business as usual on judicial confirmations was very upsetting to Daily Beast journalist Sam Stein, who accused McConnell of “stacking the judiciary” – an odd comment to make, considering “stacking” usually involves adding extra judges to court benches, not merely filling current court vacancies:

Minutes later, Stein riffed an imaginary scenario involving McConnell fretting at home about who was going to fill the next vacancy (language warning):

Bizarre. But that’s the effect McConnell has on Democrats.

That McConnell never takes his eyes of the prize is also something he’s pretty legendary for. Immediately after he successfully thwarted Democratic efforts in February to have Trump removed from office, McConnell was already teeing up judges to confirm.

At the time, NBC News White House correspondent Geoff Bennett made this on-point observation:

You betcha.
