Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer takes questions at a news conference in Los Angeles Thursday, Mar. 12, 2020. The California Department of Public Health advisory says gatherings of 250 people or more should be postponed or canceled, and gatherings of people at higher risk for severe illness from Covid-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people. The statewide guidance Newsom issued late Wednesday applies to sporting events, concerts and even smaller social gatherings in places where people can’t remain at least 6 feet apart. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms. For some it can cause more severe illness. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

A Los Angeles area reporter was given a copy of a recording from a conference call, which has LA County Director of Public Health, Dr. (not of the medical variety) Barbara Ferrer saying that schools won’t open up until “after the election.”

The call, which was a briefing to school administrators and school health officials, was an update on the county’s progress toward reopening schools.  Ferrer is heard stating that reopening will not occur until after the election.  KFI AM 640’s Steve Gregory, joined afternoon drive-time hosts John & Ken to discuss the tape.

Gregory introduced the clip without stating exactly what the tape said, but Barbara Ferrer was clear about the timeframe in reopening:

“So we uh don’t realistically anticipate moving that we would be moving to either Tier 2 or to reopening K-12 schools at least through… at least until after the election, after  you know, early November.  Like when we just look at the timing of everything it seems to us the more realistic approach to this would be to think that we are going to be where we are now, until we are done with the elections.” [Emphasis Added]

Hosts John and Ken both picked up on it immediately on the timeframe:

John: “That seems odd.”

Ken: “What does this have to do with the Elections?”

John: “That’s right.”

Ken: “That makes no sense.  She just picked a date, the Elections.”

John: “So can I..(interrupted by Ken) could I interpret it as they are holding off until the election because sending the kids back into school would uh..”

Ken: “Would be a plus sign for Trump?”

John: “… would put everyone in a good mood, they would feel the whole nightmare is over and that uh, gives goodwill to Trump and more votes.  Is that what they are doing?  Are they manipulating the school date based on whatever?  I mean it’s not going to have any effect in California…”

Ken:  “It is odd that she picked the elections.  She could have said Halloween which is a few days before..”

John: “And what do they expect to change between now and November?  What is this?  Because originally it was only a hospital measure.  It was only about running out of hospital beds and ventilators.  That fear, never materialized we are long past any dangers that the hospitals get overloaded why are they clinging to this?”

As pointed out, Ferrer didn’t say November 1 or a date.  She didn’t refer to other Holidays like Halloween, Veterans Day, or Thanksgiving.  She specifically said the Election, which shows that it is a date they have spoken of internally.  What about election day makes changes anything about the status quo from today? If by Election Day, things are better, would they not be even better December 1 or after the first of the year?

This appears to be a significant slip from Not-a-Doctor Ferrer.  Unfortunately, even if they publicly announced that their efforts were to directly affect the outcome of the election, it likely wouldn’t result in a change in the outcome of the vote in California.  It is very interesting to note that liberals are tipping their cards more and more as we move toward the election.
