That thing that "never happens" just happened again, folks. Except in this case, it appears to have gone one step beyond simple election fraud—allegedly. It involved an actual elected official. Holding office. In an American city. Illegally.
How does that happen, exactly?
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach (R) announced charges Wednesday against one Jose Ceballos. They include six felonies—three counts of voting without being qualified and three of election perjury—for allegedly casting ballots in multiple elections while "not a citizen of the United States."
The charges were filed on the same day that Ceballos won re-election as the mayor of Coldwater, Kansas.
He was the mayor of a city!
The electronically filed complaint claims that Ceballos "unlawfully, feloniously, and knowingly vote(d) or attempt(ed) to vote without being qualified, at an election," on three occasions dating back to 2022.
He is also accused of making false statements on the dates that he allegedly cast the illegal votes.
Kobach explained, according to KSNW in Wichita, that Ceballos "is not a United States citizen, he is a legal permanent resident of the United States and a citizen of Mexico.”

“In Kansas, it is against the law to vote if you are not a U.S. citizen. We allege that Mr. Ceballos did it multiple times,” Kobach said in a press release.
The charges are considered non-person felonies—meaning a crime with no specific victim—but Ceballos could still face more than 5 years in prison, according to the Attorney General's office.
Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab (R) credits President Trump with implementing the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program in helping to combat immigration fraud.
Schwab was referring to Executive Order 14248, signed by President Trump in March, which expanded free access to the SAVE program for states to verify immigration and citizenship status in contexts like voter registration.
“We now have tools, thanks to the current White House, that we haven’t had in over 10 years,” he explained to KWCH in Coldwater, “that we can check through the SAVE program, to find out if folks end up on our voter rolls."
"And they could be a legal resident, but they’re not a citizen. We want to make sure that gets clarified.”
Remarkably, Ceballos, according to that same outlet, "has been told that he can finish out the two remaining months of his current term."
Kobach, meanwhile, explained that voter fraud to any degree is detrimental to the American people.
“Voting by noncitizens, including both legal and illegal aliens, is a very real problem. It happens," he said. "Every time a noncitizen votes, it effectively cancels out a U.S. citizen’s vote."
