Trump Explains Why He Thinks ‘Dirty Cop’ James Comey Is Up a Creek Without a Paddle

President Donald Trump went off on an early morning screed on why he believes "Dirty Cop" James Comey got himself into trouble regarding his recently announced indictment.

As RedState readers are aware, Comey has been indicted by the Justice Department on two of the three counts sought by prosecutors: one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice.

On the matter of making false statements, the indictment states that the former FBI Director had insisted during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September of 2020 that he had not "authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports" regarding "Person 1."

Person 1, according to the New York Times, appears to be a reference to Hillary Clinton, and the questioning brought forth by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) at the time addressed news reports regarding the Trump Russia investigation and the Clinton investigation.

The transcript of the hearing in question shows Cruz asking Comey about the authorization of anonymous sources, pointing out that his former deputy, Andrew McCabe, had "publicly and repeatedly stated that he leaked information to the Wall Street Journal and that you were directly aware of it and that you directly authorized it."

Challenged with the question of who was lying, Comey said he stands by his testimony that he had "never authorized anyone to leak."

Trump took to Truth Social to lay it out in all caps: "James Comey is a Dirty Cop!"

He also added a post in which he laid out the case against his former FBI chief, commentary that will undoubtedly fuel critics who claim the DOJ is acting at his behest. The president, though, felt compelled to comment.

DIVE DEEPER: DOJ Announces Two-Count Indictment Against James Comey

Comey Responds Predictably to Indictment With Self-Pitying, Sanctimonious Video—'I Am Innocent'

"Whether you like Corrupt James Comey or not, and I can’t imagine too many people liking him, HE LIED!" Trump wrote. "It is not a complex lie, it’s a very simple, but IMPORTANT one."

The president went on to claim Comey "left himself ZERO margin of error on a big and important answer to a question," and his confidence in addressing the question showed "he wasn’t hedging or in dispute."

Legal experts contend that proving intent can be challenging in cases regarding false statements. Prosecutors will have to prove that Comey knowingly or intentionally lied to Congress.

Meanwhile, the former FBI Director issued a defiant, and, as my RedState colleague Bob Hoge writes, "sanctimonious" and "self-pitying" response to the legal issues he now faces.

"My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system—and I'm innocent," he said. "So let's have a trial. And keep the faith."

Comey is set to be arraigned on October 9 in a federal court in Alexandria. He is expected to plead not guilty.
