Latest Action Against U.S./U.K. Base Shows Trump Had Justifiable Concern About Iranian Threats

One of the reasons that President Donald Trump laid out for Operation Epic Fury was concern about the threat from Iran's ballistic missiles.

"Instead, they attempted to rebuild their nuclear program and to continue developing long range missiles that can now threaten our very good friends and allies in Europe, our troops stationed overseas and could soon reach the American homeland," Trump said.

Liberal media scoffed at the thought that Iran might have that capacity. Iran even put down the thought.

But now comes the report that Iran targeted the U.S./U.K. base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean with two intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM), according to multiple U.S. officials.

Neither of the missiles hit the strategic Diego Garcia base — a hub for long-range U.S. bombers, warships and submarines — that is some 2,500 miles from Iran. One missile failed in flight while a U.S. warship fired an interceptor at the other, the Journal reported, citing multiple unnamed U.S. officials. It wasn’t clear on what day the missiles were fired or if the second missile was struck by the interceptor or also failed in flight.

So it's not exactly clear how far they could have gone. But it showed that there were justified concerns about the reach of their missiles, with Diego Garcia beyond the Middle East and 2500 miles away.  That could put U.S. bases in Europe in the potential range as well. What a surprise that Iran might have been lying. Not.

Are they throwing the missiles up now, sort of like a "Hail Mary" play, hoping that it will back the U.S. off and/or score a big propaganda hit? If that was the aim, it failed badly. Indeed, it demonstrates why the U.S. needs to make sure that Iran can't do such a thing again, if it might have such capacity.

The U.K. had approved the use of the base on Friday for defensive operations, including "U.S. defensive operations to degrade missile sites and capabilities being used to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.” This followed the U.K.'s joining 5 other U.S. Allies in saying they would work together on the problem in the Strait.

The MoD said the U.K. has given the U.S. permission to use its bases at RAF Fairford in England and at Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands for “specific and limited defensive operations.”

But the targeting by Iran was before that update on the use of U.K. bases by the U.S.,” the U.K.’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) said. So the targeting wasn't in retaliation for that. It should make the U.K and any of our other allies, particularly those who could possibly be reached if Iran has this capacity, further understand the threat posed by Iran.

Iran keeps miscalculating, and this is just another big example of that.

Editor's Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.
