Bodycam footage has just been released of a police traffic stop in April in Fairfax, Virginia, that involved an Afghan immigrant.

What happened after the stop was pretty wild, and the police are alleging it was "attempted murder."

An officer pulled over 36-year-old Jamal Wali for allegedly speeding and having an expired safety inspection sticker. When the office went to speak with him, Wali immediately said he had a gun. Then things started to go south. Wali began ranting about the problems in his life, even invoking Joe Biden and George Bush. Wali said he had no driver's license or registration with him.

Warning for graphic language:

The officer knew he had a problem and immediately called for a supervisor. He tried to calm Wali down. Wali railed about how he couldn't get insurance for the car or benefits, that he "already died, I don't give a damn." That was a bad sign that he said that. He also was setting up a camera in his car.

The officer tries to commiserate with him, saying, it sounded like he was going through a "rough time." Then Wali said he should have served with the Taliban. He said he served with the Americans, which put him at risk with the Taliban if he had stayed in Afghanistan.

The officer even warned him that other officers would be arriving, that's why sirens could be heard, but told him not to be alarmed, realizing the guy was upset. When the other officers arrived, and one reached into the car on the driver's side, things went bad. According to the video, Wali pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting the two officers on the driver's side. The officer on the passenger's side then opened fire on Wali in the car. The video shows the shooting from different body cam angles, including the footage from Wali's camera.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said that the two officers on the driver's side were each shot in the arm. Wali was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He said that yes, Wali was married and had four kids. Wali had been in the U.S. legally since 2014 and they confirmed he had worked with the U.S. forces. Davis didn't believe the reference to the Taliban was an active threat, he thought it was "tied to his history."

Davis gave credit to the third officer for his quick response.

"We also realize in this particular scenario that we’re very fortunate that we didn’t have two police funerals because it was just by — or thanks to, rather — some strategic thinking, actions by our police officer who you see on the passenger’s side of the car. His actions, his deployment of that deadly force, saved the lives of the two officers that were on the driver’s side of the car. There’s no doubt about that," Davis told reporters.

The two officers were very fortunate that they survived.
