Georgia Bulldogs Have an Interesting Response to That White House Invitation They Finally Got

Joe Biden’s White House seems to have difficulty getting anything right. Even something that should be as simple as inviting winning teams to the White House to honor their championships.

As we reported, Biden’s wife Jill got them into trouble last month when she suggested inviting the runner-up women’s basketball team to the White House, not just the winning team, LSU.

“I know we’ll have the champions come to the White House, we always do,” the first lady said after watching the game. “So, we hope LSU will come. But, you know, I’m going to tell Joe I think Iowa should come, too, because they played such a good game.”

That’s so on brand for the Democrats’ participation trophy theory of life. But that caused LSU player Angel Reese to call Jill’s response a “joke.” But Iowa, which has pride, wasn’t having any of that. “I gratefully acknowledge the First Lady’s sentiments, but a day at the White House should belong solely to the champion, LSU and Coach Mulkey,” the Iowa coach Lisa Bluder tweeted. Jill had to walk back her remarks.

But then while they wanted to invite Iowa — who didn’t win — they seemed to have forgotten about the Georgia Bulldogs who did win. This year, they beat TCU, 65-7. As my colleague Bob Hoge wrote back on February 21, the Bulldogs won in January but hadn’t gotten an invitation. Some were more than a little aggrieved about it too, such as defensive lineman Warren Brinson.

They won in 2022 and didn’t get an invite, but were told that was due to COVID.

Some even speculated that maybe they weren’t getting an invite because it was more of a red state and the powers that be didn’t like that.

Members of Congress from Georgia were even involved in lobbying the White House, essentially asking “what gives?”.

“It is our hope that this repeat championship team can join the many teams prior that have been honored by the President,” a bipartisan group of Georgia’s congressional delegation wrote to the White House in January, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The White House finally got around to inviting the Bulldogs on May 3, to what they called “College Athlete Day” on June 12.

But now it’s the Bulldogs who are turning down Joe.

“The University of Georgia first received on May 3 an invitation for the Bulldog football team to visit the White House on June 12,” Georgia’s athletic association said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the date suggested is not feasible given the student-athlete calendar and time of year.”

Now, given the time of year, I could see that excuse that might not fit their schedule.

However, you would think that a visit to the White House would be a high priority and top most other things. You would also think they could arrange an alternative date. That is if they wanted to go. But I think at this point, I wouldn’t blame them if they were taking the long delay on the invitation to heart and just deciding to give Joe and Jill a pass. Joe and Jill aren’t going to like this. I wish that we all could give them a “pass” and hopefully we will, in 2024, when they get voted out.
