White House Response to Biden Naval Appointment Lie Makes Things Worse

On Friday, at the U.S. Naval Academy graduation, Joe Biden claimed at the start of his remarks that he had received an appointment to the Academy from J. Caleb Boggs in 1965, the man he later ran against for senator in 1972.

Before I begin my speech, a thought crossed my mind as I was told the Class of ‘72 is here. I was appointed to the Academy in 1965 by a senator who I was running against in 1972. (Laughter.) Never planned it that way. I wasn’t old enough to be sworn in. I was only 29 years old when I was running. He was a fine man, and his name was J. Caleb Boggs.

I didn’t come to the Academy because I wanted to be a football star. And you had a guy named Staubach and Bellino here. So I went to Delaware.

As I pointed out, that was a ridiculous claim because Biden graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965. Not to mention that Roger Staubach also graduated from the Academy in 1965 and Joe Bellino in 1961. The timing just made no sense. He also received five student deferments in the 60s and allegedly was “unfit” because of asthma in 1968.

He even claimed during the graduation speech that Boggs brought up the appointment during their Senate debate and said that if Joe had accepted the appointment, he wouldn’t be having to deal with him in the race now.

Indeed, Joe Biden — the man who is always pumping himself up — has never mentioned it before. Biden is constantly lying about things to pander to whatever audience he’s in front of. It’s a bit scary that he seems to live in an alternate reality where he just makes up things out of whole cloth that have no basis in reality. That’s the person we have in charge now. But imagine lying to Naval graduates about a Naval appointment. As I said, what kind of person does that?

But the way the White House addressed (or failed to address) the lie made things even worse and is an indication of how little they care about the truth or being honest with the American people.

CBS’s Ed O’Keefe asked about the lie. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre looked like she wanted to be anywhere else as she listened to his question.

Her response? She claimed she didn’t hear that part of the speech and she’d have to look at it before commenting.

So she doesn’t do her job which is exactly that — to explain Biden and the positions of the White House? Wasn’t she listening to what he said? That makes it worse. It was also obvious that this was going to be a question from somebody given the attention it got over the weekend.

It’s a simple question: Either he did get an appointment and she can explain why this somehow makes sense or she punts because even they can’t explain this lie, and now they’re hoping everyone will just forget about it and not follow up on it.

But claiming “I didn’t hear it” isn’t an acceptable answer. The White House transcript of the event even included it. It’s on video. So there’s no question he said it. Using that as an excuse is an insult to Americans who are entitled to the truth from Joe Biden. It’s a dangerous situation if he’s making up things like this and his White House is just refusing to answer up for this continual problem.
