Desperate Democrats are circulating a proposal to replace embattled Joe Biden and hold a “blitz primary” to choose a replacement. The proposal is reportedly gaining support with party insiders who see it as an option to avoid “democracy-ending defeat.” Hyperbole, anyone?
The idea goes something like this:
- Biden would step down as the Democratic nominee in mid-July, and announce the new system, with backing from Vice President Kamala Harris.
- Potential candidates would have a few days to throw their respective hats in the ring. The Democratic Party then would begin a primary sprint in which the six candidates who receive the most votes from delegates pledge to run positive-only campaigns in the month leading up to the convention.
- The “blitz primary” would involve weekly forums with each candidate moderated by cultural icons (Michelle Obama, Oprah, and Taylor Swift are among the names floated in the memo) in order to engage voters.
- The nominee would ultimately be chosen by the delegates using ranked choice voting before the start of the Chicago convention on Aug. 19.
- It would be announced with plenty of fanfare on the third day of the gathering. The memo imagines the nominee unveiled on stage with Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
First thought: How Democrat Party.
The proposal is the brainchild of Georgetown University Law Professor Rosa Brooks, who served in the Obama and Clinton administrations and as a volunteer policy adviser to the Biden campaign in 2020, and venture capitalist Ted Dintersmith, who has donated to multiple Democrat campaigns.
Said Dintersmith: "In the midst of malaise and crisis, we can forge an uplifting path."
We can limp to shameful, avoidable democracy-ending defeat. Or Democrats can make this Our Finest Hour. While we hope for help from Lord Almighty, the Lord helps those who help themselves. (A reference to Biden’s disastrous Stephanopoulos interview) We need to act. Now.
Second thought: How Democrat Party.
Meaning, of course, that the proposal ignores more than it addresses.
Democrat lawmakers have for several years insisted that Biden was sharp as a tack, as they've vociferously defended every assertion to the contrary along the way. Only after the disastrous debate and subsequent train-wreck interview with Stephanopoulos did they panic and begin their attempt to throw him under the bus.
BREAKING: Biden Tells Congressional Democrats He Will NOT Step Aside
George Washington University Law Professor and Fox News legal analyst Jonathan Turley weighed in on the "blitz primary" proposal, as well, pointing to the obvious "wrinkle."
One wrinkle is that Biden himself spent Sunday pledging again that he is not stepping aside. He also continued his penchant for bizarre statements like stating that “even when I was running for Senate, each time I ran – quite frankly, not a joke – Philadelphia, in particularly, got me across the line. No, I’m not joking. No, I mean it, seriously. Organizationally and in terms of fundraising, the whole deal.”
Either Biden was confessing to using Pennsylvania votes to win elections in Delaware or he was hopelessly confused. Seriously.
Biden not only remains in denial; the Philadelphia reference was yet another example of his delusional state, as well.
Turley also lampooned the "finest hour" nonsense.
The “finest hour” for the party is coming a bit late given the concerted effort of the Democratic establishment to strip away opposing candidates from ballots and crush anyone offering an alternative to Biden. At the same time, both the press and pundits attacked those who raised the President’s infirmity, including calling unedited videos “cheap fakes.”
For the last year, Democratic secretaries of state were trying to remove Trump from 2024 ballots and Democratic leaders in Florida, North Carolina and other states were refusing to allow other candidates to run against Biden in their primaries. For those voters, the primary might have seemed like a “democracy ending” election.
"At the same time, the Democratic establishment opposed any debate where Biden’s infirmities might have been observed when there was still time for voters to make another choice," Turley noted, adding:
They did so even though every poll showed the majority of Democratic voters thought Biden was too old and wanted an alternative choice. (Notably, I also favored a debate in the GOP primary. While Trump did not participate in any debate, he was widely available for media questions and pressers).
So here's the thing.
Democrat politicians don't give a damn whether objective, clear-minded people see through their panicked nonsense or buy their lies. They're only concerned with low-information, rank-and-file voters — let's call them "useful idiots" — in their base. They also know that Democrat voters who aren't low-information eagerly participate in the ruse.
So, as Professor Turley summed it up, "As Biden objects over and over again that he will not step aside, Brooks and Dintersmith are already planning his political eulogy where Biden would be celebrated as a 'modern-day George Washington.'”
Joe Biden. A modern-day George Washington. Go figure.
