As RedState has extensively reported, former President Donald Trump was indicted a second time by Special Counsel Jack Smith on Tuesday, this time on four counts, including conspiracy to “defraud the United States.” Trump pleaded not guilty, later calling the indictment “the persecution of a political opponent.”

By Friday morning, Trump was calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to “intercede” on his behalf.

In a post to Truth Social, the former president blamed “Radical Left Thugs” and appeared to suggest that because he’s “leading in all polls,” including against “Crooked Joe,” the nation’s highest court should join his battle against Smith and all charges.

CRAZY! My political opponent has hit me with a barrage of weak lawsuits, including D.A., A.G., and others, which require massive amounts of my time & money to adjudicate. Resources that would have gone into Ads and Rallies, will now have to be spent fighting these Radical Left Thugs in numerous courts throughout the Country. I am leading in all Polls, including against Crooked Joe, but this is not a level playing field. It is Election Interference, & the Supreme Court must intercede. MAGA!

While the cases against Trump might very well find their way to the Supreme Court sometime down the road, none of the cases have even gone to trial — all three criminal cases against the former president remain in early stages — so it’s unclear what Trump expects the high court to do at this juncture. In most cases, the Supreme Court operates as the final appellate jurisdiction, meaning it considers cases after they have been appealed in lower courts.

In a later Friday morning post, Trump accused Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland of filing “bogus cases against me so it becomes difficult for me to campaign,” adding:

Nothing like this has every [sic] happened before. Must be Unconstitutional [sic]?

How so? I’m not a constitutional scholar, so I won’t say Trump was wrong.

Nonetheless, Trump added: “BUT SOMEHOW, WE WILL WIN IT ALL!!!”

Trump was charged with four criminal counts related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election in a second federal indictment of the former president by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Smith asserts that Trump, along with six co-conspirators — five of whom have been identified as Rudy Guiliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Jeff Clark, and Kenneth Chesebro — carried out a monthslong effort to remain in office after Biden was declared the election winner and formally elected by the Electoral College.

The Bottom Line

Between the Biden Family Business scandal and Trump’s compounding legal woes, we — as in the entire country — find ourselves between a rock and a hard place, with the 2024 presidential primary season about to kick into high gear.

So how did we get here? That depends on who answers the question, doesn’t it?
