Legendary Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has shared some rare, public praise for Justin Herbert. Since Herbert took the mantle and became the Chargers starting quarterback, fans have wondered when Rivers would speak about him, and the fans just got their wish.

When asked about Justin Herbert, Rivers says:

“I pull like crazy for the Chargers and I pull for Justin Herbert in particular, just because I think it’s awesome that I was able to be there for 16 years. Hopefully he can be there for another 16,” Rivers said, via Crain & Company. “I always thought it was cool you look at the Packers, you can say, ‘Who’s been their quarterback the last 40 years? Favre and Rodgers.’ You don’t want it to go the Browns’ version, with 30 starters in the last 25 years.”

Rivers continues, “With Herbert, it was time for me to be done there, and then they nailed that pick.”

This does not mean Rivers has not been speaking to Herbert, maybe even advising him backstage, but to see Rivers praise Herbert for the first time in public, was precisely what the fans wanted to see and hear. Rivers had a tremendous career worthy of the Hall of Fame, and Justin Herbert seems to be on that track in his young NFL career.

Throughout his career, Rivers threw for 63,440 yards, and 421 touchdowns, while completing 64.9 percent of his passes. He also threw 209 interceptions. He finished his career with a winning record of 134-106. Rivers was an eight-time Pro Bowler; he won the 2013 AP and PFWA Comeback Player of the Year Award. The only thing Rivers did not accomplish in his career was winning a Super Bowl championship, but that should not stop him from being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Chargers fans loved watching Rivers on Sundays, and they will likely continue to love watching their quarterback–with a leader like Herbert–due to his potential. In just two years, Herbert has thrown for 9,350 yards, 69 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions. Herbert completed 66.2 percent of his passes in his first two years, as he continues to improve during every training session. Although he has a record of 15 wins and 17 losses, the Chargers improved their roster, specifically their defense, to help Herbert and the offense.

Herbert is rewriting history with the start he’s had to his NFL career. He is off to the greatest start by any quarterback in the history of the NFL. Chargers fans haven’t had confidence in winning the Super Bowl as much as they do now. The Chargers will face off against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1 of the NFL season.
