The greatest heroic story in the history of the world is the story of Jesus Christ. One of the fascinating things about the story that has reshaped the entire world and been the most important transformative force in history is that it isn’t a story about a hero in the traditional sense of the word. In the Bible, Jesus did not come with a flaming sword, beheading the enemies of God and winning mighty earthly battles.

To be sure, many of those types of heroes have existed in the world – men like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and so on. But none have changed the world as fundamentally as Jesus Christ did. And you don’t even have to believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God to acknowledge that indisputable historical fact.

What made Jesus the hero whose story changed the world is that Jesus could have been a conquering hero, but chose instead to lay down his life for the greater good. In fact, Jesus’ supporters were constantly trying to change him into an Alexander the Great, wanting him to rise up and overthrown the Roman authority, but Jesus refused. Instead, Jesus voluntarily allowed himself to be led to the slaughter for the sake of something greater. And that is why his followers have been such a force for so long. Followers of Alexander the Great are not still around doing things in his name. Even the last ruling descendant of Genghis Khan passed away over a century ago.

The GOP right now is on the edge of absolute disaster. The nomination of Donald Trump will end the party as we know it. As a probable result, the country as we know it will cease to exist. This is happening in spite of the fact that Trump still is not able to break 40% in the national polls. The reason it is happening is because Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and John Kasich all want to be Alexander the Great, and nobody wants to be a real hero like Jesus Christ was.

As long as these three are all holding on to the stubborn belief in their right to be the conqueror, Trump will walk away the victor. What the party needs right now is two real heroes. People who are willing to let their personal dreams of conquest die that the greater good might be served. The GOP has already seen several of those this election season. Scott Walker bowed out well before he had to because he recognized the menace of Trump. Rand Paul did the same thing. Jeb Bush hung on longer than he should have but also bowed out before he had to.

The GOP needs two more of those heroes. Ted Cruz has made a convincing case that it should be him who gets to be the last man standing to stop Trump from reaching 1,237. Regardless, the three remaining non-Trump candidates desperately need to get together in a room and figure out what it takes for them to unify going forward.

And doing so doesn’t necessarily mean that Ted Cruz walks away from the nomination. In order to get 1,237 himself, Cruz would have to get 60% of the remaining delegates, which he likely cannot do. However, to prevent Trump from getting 1,237, Cruz only needs to get 45% of the remaining delegates, which he can easily do if he is the last man standing. And then, if Rubio and Kasich want to come back and revisit the matter at the convention, that’s their prerogative. But for now the important thing is that Trump must be stopped from reaching 1,237 himself.

And for that to happen, the GOP needs two heroes.
