Second Lady Usha Vance took a page out of First Lady Melania Trump’s with her vintage Christmas theme decorations this year for the vice president’s residence. She also shared some of the young family's own traditions during the holiday, with her husband, Vice President JD Vance, and their three kids, Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3.
This week the second lady opened up the VP's home in Washington, D.C., which is on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory, to offer a tour of the first floor, providing a glimpse for the American public into all the holiday decorations.
Numerous posts on X, similar to the one below, provided details about some of the special touches Mrs. Vance shared with USA Today, which she described as a “little bit of a vintage Christmas.”

Speaking to USA Today, Vance talked about the “really skinny” Charlie Brown-type tree originally picked out for their home by little Vivek, and the compromise they came to, about the one they eventually cut down as a family in Lexington, Kentucky.

The report noted that there are three more, grander trees from Evergreen Acres, Pennsylvania, in the sunroom, dining room, and living room that greet guests on the ground floor of the house, with their 5-year-old's tree saved for the family quarters.
And so goes the holiday decision-making at the Vances' palatial Naval Observatory residence in Washington. Like with any American family, there's give and take in the decorations.
In addition:
It’s the young family's first Christmas at the vice presidential residence at the Naval Observatory, which is decked out with garlands, ornaments and bows.
“We're not normally intense tinsel and frosted trees people, but it's fun for this year,” Usha explained.

It went on:
A large white tent out front, where the family is entertaining this season, features framed photos of some of the house’s former residents, part of this year’s “Golden Noel” theme, paying tribute to 50 years of Christmases at the vice presidential residence. Some of the images are from scrapbooks left behind by former vice presidents. Others are from the Library of Congress.
Usha also shared some of what their family does at this time of year, saying that they typically travel to Southern California for Christmas with her side of the family, after spending Thanksgiving in Ohio with JD's family.
The second lady, who was raised Hindu, said her father always made it a priority for them to embrace the Christmas traditions of recognizing the religious meaning of the holiday.
“We'd read from the Bible and think about the Christmas story, or we would do things that emphasize the spirit of giving and service to other people, like volunteer,” Vance said. “It wasn't like a purely secular experience of Christmas, but it also wasn't our religious tradition.”
Vance is a Christian after converting to Catholicism in 2019, when she and her husband were married. Usha said it will be up to the kids if they chose to convert, something that has already been happening, with Ewan converting in 2024.
And then there's question of Christmas presents and Santa Claus. Usha said Ewan decided in 2024 he no longer believed in St. Nick, and as is common with kids who have older siblings, Vivek was next. So, right now, it’s their 3-year-old daughter Mirabel who is still a believer in the jolly old elf.
“She's still in on it," the second lady said.
Here's to hoping the Vances have a very Merry Christmas. And all of you too!
