Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent issued an ominous warning to Iran on Sunday: an "economic D-Day" begins at dawn.
Bessent has been the Trump administration's point man on economic sanctions against the Islamic Regime, and his posting on X hinted that a new financial offensive – aimed at cutting Iran off from virtually any remaining sources of trade or financing – was already underway.
The goal, wrote Bessent, was to “sever every economic lifeline” until Tehran is completely isolated.

The Islamic Republic has subsisted by dressing extortion as security guarantees. It has drawn strength from a calculus that regards Iranian retaliation as certain and American enforcement as negotiable. Under President Trump, that era is over. And those who fear the danger of defying Tehran ought not to discount the cost of testing Washington.
The President has created the conditions to leverage every agency, every authority and action many assumed we would never summon. Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone.
Bessent's warning seems to reach beyond Iran, extending to countries, companies, and banks that are currently doing business with Tehran, and could signal that the administration believes it has achieved its initial goals of wiping out Iran's military and degrading its nuclear capabilities. An economic "D-Day" could be the next phase of the all-out offensive.
There's also a diplomatic element at play here: the Trump administration is, once again, putting other countries in the position of having to decide between playing nice with Iran or continued access to U.S.-led financial systems.
Secretary Bessent is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2 PM ET Monday to reveal more details.
