'Deeply Concerning': AK School District in Trouble With AG After Refusing to 'Endorse' U.S. Founding Docs

ALEKSANDER NOVAK-ZEMPLINSKI

Alaska Attorney General Stephen J. Cox called out an Alaska school district for rebelling against the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, stating that it "does not endorse the materials or viewpoints expressed in them." Now, the district is crying it was just a "mistake."

In an article first shared by AG Cox from Must Read Alaska, the headline read, "A Subtle Revolution: Anchorage School District Places' We Do Not Endorse' Disclaimer on U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence."

"This is deeply concerning. Public officers have to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution," Cox wrote in response. "I took such an oath on my first day. Alaska law requires school board members to sign—and swear to support and defend—the U.S. Constitution."

"When a public school district says it won't endorse the Constitution or the Declaration, or 'the viewpoints expressed in them,' something has gone terribly wrong," he added.

The report noted that the anti-American story was brought to the publication's attention by a friend of a parent who found the disclaimer sticker pasted on the back of their students' "pamphlet of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence," which had been produced by Hillsdale College, as the pictures in the article showed.

It continued, in the  Must Read Alaska story linked above:

Not only did Anchorage School District refuse to endorse the American Constitution and Declaration of Independence but took pains to sticker an "Anchorage School District does not endorse the materials or viewpoints expressed in them" disclaimer on the documents. Such a blatant attack on our most foundational documents which detail America's most dearly held values and shapes the American identity requires explanation.

However, after the news broke and parents/ AG Cox weighed in about it, the school district now said that it was all just a silly little mistake:

"This was our mistake," a spokesperson for the district said in a statement to the Anchorage Daily News. "The request that came in wasn't for a flyer or poster and shouldn't have been processed through that system. We will be following up directly with the requestor to make things right."

Cox confirmed the about-face by the district, when speaking to Fox News.

"Shortly after the news broke, the School District took ownership, apologized, and promised corrective action," Cox added. "The Law Department and the Department of Education and Early Development have followed up with the District with specific questions, but in a spirit of cooperation, we have offered to help review ASD's policies and procedures to ensure it never happens again."

The report added:

Following the backlash and public spotlight on the flyer, the spokesperson from the Anchorage School District told Anchorage Daily News that the district is reviewing the process to ensure it doesn't happen again and that the "founding documents are taught in every school and reflect the values we want every student to understand."

Well, good on the district to admit wrongdoing and fix it. But isn't it just so funny how every time these "mistakes" happen, it's always only coming from one direction?
