The Biden Administration Believes We Can Save the Earth by Returning to Remote Work

Remember not too long ago when the Biden administration toyed with the idea that we should get rid of gas stoves and the fallout from that? We had an entire, multi-day news cycle about how it was right-wing panic over something that was never going to happen.

And, almost immediately after that news cycle was over, the media returned to writing stories about how people were eyeing getting rid of gas stoves.

Well, I somewhat expect that to happen with this story from the Washington Free Beacon, which itself is proof that we have lost our fu… ever-loving minds.

The COVID-19 pandemic wasn’t all bad, a new Biden administration plan to fight climate change argues: It at least “highlighted major opportunities” to reduce travel demand and lower carbon emissions through “remote work and virtual interactions.”

The plan—which President Joe Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency and Energy, Transportation, and Housing departments released in January—aims to “eliminate nearly all greenhouse gas emissions” from the transportation sector by 2050, mostly through a transition to electric vehicles. Also included in the plan, however, is a controversial call to reduce “commuting miles” through “an increase in remote work and virtual engagements,” including in education.

That the administration is full-steam ahead on this silly idea of saving the world one amenity at a time is really just breathtaking. If there is one thing COVID-19 showed us, it’s that society fundamentally grew worse in isolation. While work productivity did increase for office jobs, huge sectors of the economy suffered as they were shut down during the pandemic. The call to reduce “commuting miles” also means a call to reduce trips to places like stores, restaurants, etc. Fewer people out during the day will have a negative impact on places that can’t operate if no one is there.

What’s even worse is the view that including education in this absurd plan is somehow a great idea. We have ample evidence from the pandemic and in the post-pandemic era that remote and hybrid education hurt students’ growth.

The problem isn’t the environment. Sure, the skies may clear and the climate may stabilize and unicorns will return to the wild once more, but humans don’t do well in isolation – and that’s exactly what you’re calling for when you call for remote work and remote education. There is a reason activists call for an end to solitary confinement in prison: People lose their minds in isolation. Now imagine that on a nationwide scale as people are working from home, not able to socialize in the workplace or in schools.

This isn’t that far removed from Jimmy Carter demanding the power to ration gasoline, the only difference being the Biden administration is openly flirting with extremist environmentalist groups. But the message is still the same.

And I’m asking you for your good and for your nation’s security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel. Every act of energy conservation like this is more than just common sense, I tell you it is an act of patriotism.

May your professional and social lives suffer because of the senseless actions and policies of our government. Amen.
