Like a Good Democrat Ivanka Pushes Debunked Wage Gap Myth on #EqualPayDay

It’s no secret that President Trump’s favorite daughter is a New York liberal. Many on the left even think of Ivanka as the only hope for saving America from whatever hell they think her father is about to usher in. Like any loyal Democrat, Ivanka is pushing the debunked talking point about the gender wage gap.

The gap between the average salaries for men and women is not evidence that women are not getting paid equally for equal work. The gap exists because on average women choose different career paths than men do. Women also choose to leave the work force at a higher rate to raise children which lowers the average level of experience and seniority. There is no systemic practice of paying women less for the same work. If that happens anywhere, it is already illegal.

There was an interesting graphic (see below) posted recently on Imgur (originally from the FiveThirtyEight blog). It shows a list of professions sorted by their respective gender ratios. The more technical, physically demanding, or dangerous professions are chosen by relatively fewer women. Those professions also tend to be the higher paying ones.

There may well be some systemic discrimination (real or perceived) that prevents women from entering some of those career fields, but of the ones who do enter those fields, their salaries are more than likely commensurate with their experience and seniority. If it isn’t, then laws are already being broken.

If you believe the statistical wage gap is a problem then you necessarily believe women are making bad choices.  Even many feminists have rejected the basis of the #EqualPay talking point as mathematically false. It persists primarily because rampant mathematical ignorance makes it easier for the left to play divisive identity politics.

Ivanka has her father’s ear when it comes to leftist policies like mandatory paid family leave and federally funded childcare, so maybe she’ll convince him the wage gap is real too.
