Scalise issued the following statement:
I have now begun treatment, which will continue for the next several months. I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington, continuing my work as Majority Leader and serving the people of Louisiana's First Congressional District.
In 2017 Scalise was critically wounded in a mass shooting carried out by a deranged leftist who ambushed Republicans practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. Five years later he told Fox News' Carley Shimkus:
Look, it's been a long road to recovery, but God performed miracles that day. Putting [Congressman Wenstrup] there, David Bailey, and Crystal Griner with Capitol Police who both were shot during the shootout and yet, ultimately, took the shooter down to save all of us that were there.
Congressman, we hope to see you in remission soon.
