In decades past, the start of June typically has stores, businesses, and even government buildings festooned with Pride flags and other acknowledgements and merchandise promoting the LGBTQ+ celebration. However, as the winds of culture, political, and civic leadership have shifted, so has the singular focus of the month.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun kicked off June by posting a Proclamation that the month of June is now: "Nuclear Family Month." The LGBTQ-plus all the letters folks, along with the counterculture warriors and their allies, are none too happy

Today, I proclaimed June as Nuclear Family Month in Indiana.

As a father of four and grandfather of seven, I have seen firsthand the impact that loving, committed families can have across multiple generations. As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this proclamation recognizes the important role families play in shaping the future of our state and our country.

Indiana will continue supporting policies that strengthen families and help the next generation thrive.

Gov. Mike Braun has declared June "Nuclear Family Month" in Indiana, sparking overwhelmingly negative backlash on social media.

"The nuclear family, consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children, is God's design for the family structure and has been the foundation of society since the creation of the world," the June 1 proclamation reads in part.

While the announcement does not mention Pride Month, many of those commenting said they saw it as a rejection of the month-long celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, which takes place in June. Responses were awash in rainbow emojis and GIFs.

Commenters also raised concerns about the significance of the absence of adopted and fostered kids in the second section of Braun's proclamation, which states that "children living with their married, biological parents have better physical and emotional well-being." The proclamation does not provide any evidence for the assertion.

The X announcement does include the replies of citizens (or followers) who gave support to Gov. Braun's Proclamation. While the Proclamation does not explicitly include single mothers and fathers, in reading the text, it does not exclude them either. It simply acknowledges a fact: that traditional nuclear families being recognized, celebrated, and encouraged is essential if America expects to continue for another 250 years. It also makes the acknowledgement that "Strong families are the most effective means to raise children and capable adults." While it is a bigger lift for single-parent homes, homes with blended families, and homes where the grandparent or grandparents have taken on the child-rearing responsibilities in the parents' absence, it does not exclude these types of families from the ability to also be strong and nurturing environments. One can strive for the ideal while acknowledging that the reality can fall short of the ideal.

“And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” 🌈

This trend of reclaiming June is becoming a thing, particularly in deep red states. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a resolution passed by the Tennessee General Assembly (HJR 182), establishing June as "Nuclear Family Month."

Tennessee got this one right. The Tennessee General Assembly passed HJR 182, signed by Governor Bill Lee on April 9, officially designating June 2026 as Nuclear Family Month. The resolution recognizes the nuclear family as one husband, one wife, and their biological, adopted, or fostered children, and affirms a truth that used to be common sense: strong families build strong communities. Before government programs, bureaucracies, and social experiments tried to replace the home, the family was the first institution, the first school, the first safety net, and the first place children learned faith, discipline, responsibility, and love.

In the past, June 1st has marked the beginning of Pride Month for millions of people across the United States, but this year in Tennessee, June has a new designation.

On April 9, Tennessee officially designated June as "Nuclear Family Month" after Gov. Bill Lee signed a House joint resolution, initially proposed by Rep. Bud Hulsey, R-Kingsport.

Hulsey’s resolution does not reference the LGBTQ+ community; however, its wording effectively excludes same-sex married couples while emphasizing conservative Christian values as the basis for designating June as Nuclear Family Month.

“The nuclear family, consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children, is God’s design for familial structure and has been the bedrock of society since the creation of the world,” the resolution states. “The nuclear family is God’s perfect design for humanity and is aligned with the long-held traditional values of Tennessee.”

While Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders' proclamation is more open-ended and muted, she has declared the month of June as "Fidelity Month."

In a proclamation issued on May 27, Sanders declared June 2026 to be Fidelity Month.

The document states that the United States was founded on principles of faith, liberty and patriotism, citing references to God in the Declaration of Independence and comments from President George Washington about the importance of virtue and morality in self-government.

The proclamation says Arkansas' commitment to spiritual and civic institutions is central to the state's identity and argues that "cultivating fidelity to God, family, community, and country contributes to human flourishing and supports a healthy, stable, well-ordered society."

It also states that Fidelity Month offers residents an opportunity to reflect on and renew their commitment to those values.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has also issued a Proclamation supporting the traditional family, when she declared June as "Strong Families Month."

In the proclamation, Ivey declared that “strong families build a strong Alabama” and that “Alabama families remain the foundation of healthy communities across our state, responsible citizenship and a prosperous future.”

Notably, Ivey’s proclamation appears to discredit same-sex marriages, declaring that “homes led by a father and mother provide children with the structure and discipline necessary to succeed through life.”

The governor’s office did not immediately respond to APR’s request for comment on whether Ivey believes homes led by same-sex couples fail to provide children with the same structure and discipline.

Pride is still going strong in these states and others. Central Alabama Pride lists a whole host of events in Birmingham and surrounding areas, and Nashville Pride is doing the same. However, there is an admission that the huge corporate sponsorship and funding that used to characterize the LGBTQ events has dropped off, as has the funding for more widespread pushes of LGBTQ+ advocacy and initiatives across the board.

Jordan Braxton, co-president of the United States Association of Prides, confirmed that while some smaller Pride events have actually seen sponsorship growth, a majority of Pride organizations have experienced a significant reduction in funding.

[...]

One of the most high-profile casualties of this funding drought is Tampa Pride, which announced a full one-year hiatus, cancelling its 2026 festival, Diversity Parade, and all other scheduled LGBTQ+ Pride events. The organization cited “the current political and economic climate,” including challenges with corporate sponsorships, reductions in county, state, and federal grant funding, and the discontinuation of DEI programs under Florida’s government.

Of course, these organizations are blaming the federal and state governments' removal of DEI in government funding and structures. But the bottom line is that hopping on the Pride train is no longer financially lucrative or convenient for corporations. Whether that is because they no longer get an automatic boost in funding because of the clawback of DEI, or that the customer base no longer matches the sentiment, remains to be seen. The backlash Target, Cracker Barrel, and other retailers experienced, and still haven't recovered from, is an indication that family-friendly will always be the purview of traditional and nuclear families. Corporations may finally be getting wise to this fact.

The wealth of opportunities for customer engagement, along with new customer reach through supporting traditional families and family structures, is now not just an incentive but an organic alignment across the nation.
