Orange County, CA District Attorney Todd Spitzer is known for his tough stance on crime. While Los Angeles County was suffering under the rash of crime from former D.A. George Gascon, OC DA Todd Spitzer was holding the line and prosecuting crime. From his X accounts, to public service announcements, to billboards strategically placed along the county line between Los Angles County and Orange County, criminals are warned against attempting any crime in his jurisdiction.

OC is also a pro-2A county, where the Sheriff Don Barnes assigns concealed carry permits to qualified firearms owners without the restrictions and stonewalling of other counties. Yet, some criminals just like to test their limits or are stupider than most. On Thursday, a team of thieves thought it would be easy pickings to overtake a jewelry store in Anaheim.

That was their first mistake. The second one was assuming the owner would not fight back.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

An Anaheim businessowner recently scared off a mob of thieves trying to break into his store by firing a warning shot at the crowd. The whole thing was caught on store security footage.

The attempted robbery happened at Al-Amira Jewelry on July 17. The owner told FOX 11 that it was close to closing time, when five cars pulled up to the front of the store.

Security camera footage showed about 20 people piling out of the cars and mobbing the store's entrance. Some of them had sledgehammers and pickaxes and started smashing the door.

Seconds later, though, the group scattered, got back into their cars, and they all drove off.

Truth be told, criminals are probably fed up with Los Angeles County. Businesses are closed, and the people with anything worth taking have moved away. Too many criminals with not much ground to cover anymore, so they are probably on the lookout for greener pastures. These not-so-brilliant thieves quickly discovered they would not find that in Orange County.

Video from inside the store showed the other angle. When the people inside saw the thieves, they ran behind the counter. Several came back out to the front, armed. That's when the owner fired one shot.

Odah Awad, the store's owner, said he thinks the group was watching the store. Awad said the group moved in just several minutes after one of the last customers left the store.

He said he heard a loud noise, and when he looked at the door, he saw "many people. I can't count it."

"Then I have to defend myself and my store and my employees. I take my gun, I shoot one  bullet, I scare him (the person at the door), he moved and the problem is done," Awad said.

Quick and purposeful thinking on Mr. Awad's part. It helps to not only be a good guy with a gun, but it also helps to have the backing of your police force and D.A. who protect the citizen's right to armed self-defense.
