Media Tries Desperately to Convince the Nation That Trump's Age Is the Real Issue

The general election hasn’t even fully geared up yet, and the media is already putting on a clinic in the art of gaslighting. After special counsel Robert Hur released his report about the classified documents investigation into President Joe Biden, Democrats have been scrambling to offset the political damage it did.

Hur’s report confirmed what most Americans already know: President Biden’s age and lack of mental acuity are serious issues. He detailed Biden’s faulty memory and struggles with recalling basic information. Yet, Biden’s difficulties were on full display before the investigation and report. It seems any time he gives a speech or press briefing, he shows the nation once again that he is not up to par.

To counteract the impact of Hur’s report, several media outlets have taken to escalating a strategy they began using last year: pretending that former President Donald Trump, who is the most likely challenger to Biden in the general election, has the same age and cognitive problems as Biden.

A number of these organizations have published reports over recent weeks aimed at mitigating concerns about Biden’s mental acuity by suggesting that Trump is experiencing the same level of mental decline, pointing to a series of verbal flubs the former president made while on the campaign trail.

The Baltimore Sun published a letter from a reader who claims that Trump is exhibiting signs of dementia and senility.

For the past three years Trump’s been displaying gradually worsening dementia symptoms, and very few are willing to talk about it. Now that his senility is so severe, he seems to have forgotten his own family members. While making a thank-you speech to all who helped in his campaign after winning the North Carolina primary, he needed a note card that listed his children’s names and he still forgot to thank his son Eric. He also confused his wife with Mercedes Schlapp. These are classic signs of severe dementia. Don’t forget that he also thought he was running against Barack Obama and confused Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi.

Dr. Shiv Sudhakar wrote a piece for Today.com in which he claimed the former president “displayed memory issues” during a recent speech in which he mixed up the names of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

President Donald Trump has also displayed memory issues, recently mixing up fellow presidential candidate and former Gov. Nikki Haley and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Trump has also confused Biden and former President Barack Obama at least seven times, Forbes reported. Trump has boasted in the past about acing a cognitive test that screens for early dementia, though it's not clear when he last took it. In 2018, he received a score of 30 out of 30, according to then-White House physician Dr. Ronny Jackson.

Not to be outdone, Salon, a left-wing propaganda outlet, published an interview with another doctor who claims Trump has issues with cognitive decline.

In a recent conversation with Dr. John Gartner, a prominent psychologist and contributor to the bestselling book "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President," the former faculty member at Johns Hopkins University told me that based on Trump's speech, memory, recall, and other behavior, he appears to be “hypomanic” and cognitively deteriorating at a rapid rate:

This weekend, Trump showed more evidence of his accelerating dementia. Trump named the wrong month for the primary, said that Putin would rather see Biden as president and he agreed with him, and that he made Israel the capital of Israel. But most important are the fundamental breakdowns in his ability to use language. Once you become aware of a symptom, you start to notice it, whereas before you might have overlooked it.

Gartner also claimed Trump showed signs of phonemic paraphasias, which, in English, means that a person accidentally substitutes one word for another or changes words and sentences in an inaccurate manner.

Trump manifested a number of phonemic paraphasias. He was trying to say evangelist, for example, but haltingly said "evangelish.” He was trying to say “three years later," but said, “three years, lady, lady, lady.” Trying to spit out the word “lately,” he sounded like a car with a bad battery struggling to turn over. When Trump can't find a word his whole demeanor changes. It’s almost like someone pulled the metaphorical plug. Trump looks blank, stops in mid-sentence (or mid-word), his jaw goes a little slack, and when he starts to talk again, he slurs, speaks haltingly, and often looks confused. Trying to get the word out, he shifts to a non-word that is easier to pronounce. When people are losing their ability to use language they use non-words, They start with the stem of the real word, and then they improvise from there.

Welp, I suppose this means that Trump and Biden are basically in the same geriatric boat, doesn’t it?

Not so fast.

The hard, cold reality for the left is that no sane person is going to buy this line of messaging. It would require millions of American voters not to see what is obvious about both candidates. Sure, Trump makes his share of flubs when speaking publicly, but not to the point that any rational person would believe he is drifting into dementia. For an older man, the former president continues to exhibit a level of energy that is leaps and bounds ahead of Biden.

On the other hand, President Biden can hardly get through a public appearance without eliciting laughter and even sympathy from those watching. How many times has he screwed up people’s names while giving speeches? How often has the president wandered off the stage in the wrong direction after addressing a crowd? What about all of those times he has fallen up the stairs while boarding Air Force One?

Trump has never displayed this level of mental difficulty, and everyone knows it. The press is perpetuating a narrative that will only be accepted by those who desperately want to believe it. It is highly unlikely that this strategy will change the minds of independent and moderate voters who also have eyes, ears, and brains. Still, it’s hard to blame the propagandists at these news outlets. After all, what other tactics do they have at their disposal at this point?
