Former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, who is currently running for the U.S. Senate, gave some more juicy details surrounding the bombshell revelation that a high-ranking Republican tried to bribe her to stay out of politics.

During a conversation with conservative commentator Glenn Beck, Lake explained what led her to release the audio to the public. She recounted listening to the audio while having dinner with her family almost one year after her conversation with former Arizona GOP Chairman Jeff DeWit, who claimed “very powerful people” from the “east” told him they were willing to pay her to stay out of politics and refrain from running for office for two years:

I was eating dinner with my husband, and my daughter was with us, and I happened to track it down, found it, and hit play while we were eating dinner and literally, as vivid as I recalled it — and I think in my speech at CPAC I described it pretty well — our jaws dropped to the floor. We were shocked. I said oh my gosh, this is so much worse than I even remembered it.

The revelation about the conversation sent shockwaves through the Republican political sphere after the Daily Mail published a report including the recording.

The Daily Mail obtained an audio recording of a March 2023 conversation allegedly between Jeff DeWit and Lake, who was "publicly mulling a run for Senate" at the time. On the audio, DeWit can be heard trying to convince Lake to accept money for remaining out of politics for two years. "There are very powerful people who want to keep you out," DeWit said.

An audio recording obtained by DailyMail.com reveals the extraordinary moment when what appears to be Arizona's top Republican official tried to bribe populist firebrand Kari Lake not to run in the state's Senate race.

Jeff DeWit, 51, chair of the Arizona Republican Party, can be heard asking Lake, a close ally of Donald Trump, to name her price to stay out of politics for two years.

'There are very powerful people who want to keep you out,' he tells her in a conversation recorded at the start of March last year.

DeWit tells Lake, 54, one of the most public faces of the former president's MAGA movement and a woman frequently spoken of as a 2024 vice-presidential pick, that he thinks Trump will lose and it is time to make way for someone else.

After asking her not to mention the conversation to anyone, he makes his first offer.

“So the ask I got today from back east was: ‘Is there any companies out there or something that could just put her on the payroll to keep her out?’” DeWit said to Lake, who balked at the suggestion.

Shortly after the release of the audio, DeWit resigned from his position and claimed the recording had been “selectively edited.”

Less than a day after a bombshell recording of a conversation in which he seemingly attempted to bribe Kari Lake to stay out of politics for two years surfaced, Arizona Republican Party Chair Jeff DeWit has resigned, and had some harsh words for Lake in his resignation statement.

DeWit admits that the conversation between himself and Lake occurred, but says that the recording that was released was "selectively edited" and "taken out of context." He says that Lake worked for him in his "private company" at the time and the conversation was one between an employer and employee, and that the release of the recording was "not just a betrayal of trust but also a violation of the fiduciary responsibilities of an employee."

This fiasco has provided the public with a glimpse behind the scenes of American politics. It shows what happens between politicians, political operatives, and others when the cameras are not present. For many, this episode appeared to be yet another effort on the part of the establishment to prevent the continued rise of the populist MAGA movement in the GOP.

The audio seems to suggest that the “back east” folks wanted to sideline Lake, who is a leading voice in MAGA circles, while former President Donald Trump is seeking the GOP presidential nomination. This is the latest high-profile development in the tug-of-war between the establishment and anti-establishment factions of the party. The episode raises a critical question that all Republican voters should be asking: How much more of this is going on behind closed doors?
