Fetterman to Return Bob Menendez’s Donations 'in Envelopes Stuffed With $100 Bills' Amid Bribery Scandal

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) plans to return all donations given to his campaign by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), who is facing federal charges of bribery. The news comes just after Menendez and his wife were indicted for accepting bribes from three businessmen in exchange for various favors, including interfering with an investigation and providing “sensitive” material to the Egyptian government.

Fetterman was one of many Democrats to criticize the embattled Menendez and has also called on him to resign. During an interview, a spokesman explained that Fetterman wishes to return the donations in a rather unorthodox but humorous manner.

John Fetterman, the first senator to call on Bob Menendez to resign, plans to give back the $5,000 that the embattled New Jersey Democratic senator gave the Pennsylvania Democrat’s Senate campaign in 2022.

And Fetterman wants to do it in envelopes full of hundred-dollar bills.

“We are in process of returning the money,” said Joe Calvello, a Fetterman spokesman, “in envelopes stuffed with $100 bills.”

The move is a call-back to Menendez and his wife Nadine being indicted Friday on federal charges of engaging in "a corrupt relationship with three New Jersey associates and businessmen." The indictment was dramatic, featuring allegations of bribes paid by a shiny, new Mercedes-Benz C-300 convertible, gold bars valued at more than $100,000, and stacks of one-hundred-dollar bills atop a jacket with Menendez’s name on it.

Fetterman’s response appears to be a sarcastic way to reference Menendez’s alleged illicit activities. Of course, the New Jersey senator is entitled to the presumption of innocence. However, Fetterman appears to recognize that the nature of the allegations should preclude him from being in a position that influences national policy. Menendez has already stepped down from his position as the chair of the Foreign Relations Committee but has remained defiant when it comes to giving up his seat in the Senate. He has predicted that he will eventually be exonerated.

The indictment, which was unsealed last week, accuses the senator and his wife, Nadine, of accepting bribes from three businessmen between 2018 and 2022. On Monday, he denied the allegations and claimed he would be vindicated.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., insisted at a press conference Monday he will be exonerated on a new federal corruption indictment.

Menedez detailed his decades-long record in Congress and insisted hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash the FBI found at his home was withdrawn from his personal savings account.

"The allegations leveled against me are just that, allegations," Menendez said. "For anyone who has known me throughout my 50 years of public service, they know I have always fought for what is right. My advocacy has always been grounded. And what I learned from growing up as the son of Cuban refugees, especially my mom, my hero, Evangelina Menendez. Everything I accomplished, I worked for despite the nay sayers and everyone who has underestimated me."

"I firmly believe that when all the facts are presented, not only will I be exonerated, but I still will be New Jersey’s senior senator," he added, falling short of formally announcing re-election. "The court of public opinion is no substitute for our revered justice system. We cannot set aside the presumption of innocence for political expediency when the harm is irrevocable."

Other Democrats have criticized Menendez while stopping short of urging him to resign.
